I was looking into name meanings and references in the Christian bible and came across some interesting coincidences, sorry if I’m repeating anything.
Jacob means ‘supplanter’, or one who illegally seizes and controls the place of another, in the bible Jacob and his brother Esau were twins born to Isaac. Esau was considered an outdoor person and a great hunter, while Jacob was shy and spent most of his time inside and studying. Even when they were in the womb they fought with each other, and although Esau was born first, Jacob came along immediately after as he was holding onto his brothers heel. This is often taken to mean that Jacob was trying to stop Esau being born first, and therefore inherit the Kingdom. Jacob did in fact trick Esau out of his inheritance in later life, not once but twice. Esau was starving and near death when Jacob offered to sell him some food in return for his birthright, Esau agreed because if he died the kingdom would be Jacobs anyway. Then later when their father, Isaac, was sick and blind he wanted to pass on his prophetic blessing to Esau in case he died. Jacob’s mother helped him pre! tend to be his brother so that he would be blessed instead.
The Bad Twin has been mentioned on Lost before, could Jacob be the twin that isn’t meant to be ruling the island but tricked his way into being a leader? I can also see parallels between John and Ben here. Both have similar lives (mothers called Emily, premature births, meant to kill their father) which compare them to being twins even though they are not. Locke is the eldest and the hunter, Ben the younger and more intellectual.
Some other interesting facts I found out are:
Isaac’s mother and his wife were unable to have children, their pregnancies were divine intervention.
Abaddon is usually seen as being ‘Angel of the Abyss’, but there is another similar name in the bible that is written in Hebrew as Abdon/Avdon. The name means ‘servant/mighty worshipper’. Abdon is the one of the Judges of Israel in the bible (the word Judge is taken to be comparable to a King), and was a descendant of Jacob.
Richard means ‘strong power’
Michael comes from the Hebrew Micha who is a man of the tribe of Benjamin
Walt means ‘Ruler of the army’
Kate means ‘pure’ – not so sure I can tie this one in anywhere though, lol.
