We all know that they are not in the "p" word. Or that is what we have been told over and over again. I will stick to this because I believe it.
But what if they all did die in the crash. That is everyone except the ones on the list. It seems odd that the island has so much power over them. Whether they live or die. That kind of thing.
Now we know that something on the island can take the shape of dead people. We also know that it can go of island. Plus it can touch objects.
What if there was some kind of glitch when the plane crashed. Such as the release of a lot of electromagnetic energy. We have seen that the smoke monster can show memories in it. Maybe it stores the memories of the deceased.
It has nothing to do with making up for past mistakes as much as excepting your fate. The survivors are the ghost like simulations of their mind data floating uncontrollably through the island's field of whatever. The data floats around waiting to be gathered and sorted. Not realizing it is data. With the interruption of data flow it caused an anomaly that makes the data think it is still alive. Hence the survivors have taken form.
When the people die that is their data finally being sorted back into the main frame. And the island is controling the actions of the other survivors to try and get them in line for their transferences.
