just wanted to put this out there, so sorry if this theory is already about.
i have been thinking about this theory for a few weeks now and its about why the women on the island cant give birth and then die.
various religion's believe in a pool of souls, where as human life starts (ie pregnancy) a soul is allocated from the pool, and as life ends (death) the soul returns to the pool of souls to be reallocated(reincarnation).
is it possible that the island is so far removed from time/space or whatever that even the soul cannot reach/find it, so when a woman gets pregnant the biological stuff happens but no soul arrives so the body rejects the baby as defective killing it and the mother? this would also explain why mothers that get pregnant off the island are fine because a soul has been allocated. so its not the island killing the women and baby's, it just the body's reaction to not receiving a soul for the baby. also as people die on the island their souls cant return to the pool for the same reason and it remains on the island, could that explain the whispers?
