*****This Theory includes information from the Finale. Stop reading if you haven't seen it.*****
This is a brainstorm. I just finished with the Finale and my mind is swirling with new ideas -- trying to sort through all the new information and come up with something tangible.
One of the most interesting clues as to where the show is heading came from outside of the show itself -- a commercial for Octagon Global Recruiting. You will find on OGR's website an advertisement for the Dharma Initiative.
What?
Up to this point, we have been led to believe that the DI has gone extinct from the actions of Ben and the Others. What if the DI is larger than the island? Who resupplied the Swan station if all contact had been lost with the island? If the Dharma Initiative is still in operation, what other secret -- and highly special -- locations are being exploited?
While standing in from of Locke's coffin (just writing that makes me think I've made some mistake), Ben tells Jack that there have been dark times on the island. This could mean one of several things:
- Other malevolent forces have taken control of the island
- The volcano is wreaking fiery havoc
- Because of the island repositioning itself in time/space, Widmore (or other entity) was able to find the island
Based on the 'current' recruitment for Dharma people, I'm theorizing that the latter of the above may be correct.
What happened when Desmond turned the failsafe key? A large amount of electromagnetism was released and the sky turned purple. An outpost in the Antarctic picked up a 'ping' on a computer, phoned Penny, and the O6, Desmond, and Frank are ultimately saved.
What happened when Ben turned the Frozen Donkey Wheel (very odd scene, if you ask me)? A bright light appeared, the sky turned purple, and the island 'vanished'. Did another outpost -- perhaps the same one, even -- find the resulting 'ping' on the computer screen again? Who else is watching besides Widmore?
Widmore et al finds another ping in a new location. Maybe not on the day that the island disappeared -- perhaps months or years later. Once the new location is learned, another team is put together to storm the island. This time, it works. Dharma is, once again, in control. Hundreds of new DI members now inhabit the island. This is the current time.
Meanwhile, Locke and the Others are helpless. They become what the Others were when the DI existed years before -- the Hostiles.
Jacob has weakened enough, especially at this point, that he/the island cannot cope with the new wave of DI people. Jacob knows that the O6's departure has -- one way or another -- led to the return of the DI. The island's need for the O6 is communicated to Locke.
Locke, understanding what needs to happen, leaves the island (how is uncertain -- there are other ways to leave as we must assume because of Ben's travels and many passport identities) and comes to the O6 and Walt. He must persuade them to return.
Free will is very important to the overall story line. We have seen this time and time again. Locke is desperate but cannot bring the O6 back unless it's on their own free will. This is as far as I will go -- free will can be an entirely separate theory post on another day.
I theorize that his death might have very well been a suicide, despite Ben's disbelief. Locke knew that the only way to unite them all and bring them back (Ben persuading Kate one way or another), was to sacrifice his own life for the island. Personally, I believe he will be well rewarded once he (and the O6) returns.
The beginning of Season 5 will be now. Today (January something-or-other 2009). We will see how the O6 reunite and find a way back to the island with Locke's body. Meanwhile, the story of the island over the past 2-3 years will be told via flashbacks. The flashbacks will continue until present time off-island (our time). This could be the end of season 5 (similarly to how we are now in present time at the end of season 4).
What distressed me is what Claire told Kate -- "Don't you DARE bring him back!" Why are there two DISTINCTLY different communications coming from the island? Locke says that their departure was a mistake and they ALL must come back. Claire warns Kate to never return. Locke is speaking for the island. Who is Claire speaking for? My brain hurts!
The producers have said that the Dharma Initiative will play a very important role in the future. I assumed that this would take place in some sort of flashback story device or backdrop. Now, it seems, that the DI is very much alive and well.
Ben seems to know what is taking place from an off-island perspective. Undoubtedly, he has many connections. He understands the "dark times" that are at hand. I'm betting he has knowledge of the new DI.
I theorize that the O6 get back to the island through the new Dharma Initiative as members or psuedo-members (through connections, etc.) I also believe that Sun will help considerably.
It may seem foolish to even dream up any theories right now. The producers have brushed all our ideas aside with ease by introducing entirely new circumstances and changing the rules every season. Season 5, I'm sure, will be no exception.
A few more thoughts -
I'm sure this has been speculated on before -- but I believe that Aaron and Ji Yeon are Adam and Eve. They will play a pivotal role in the distant future.
How can 15-year-old Saltine crackers be perfectly edible? There has to be something to this. Any ideas? Nothing happens in Lost without a reason.
