The "Claire is dead" camp of losties site her miraculous survival of the missile attack as a clue. If we accept this explanation, might we then extend this theory to Sawyer as well? His survival was also miraculous. How could trained marksmen, who piled up three bodies, miss shooting, or even wounding, Sawyer? Could this be a clue that he and Claire are both dead? My thought when watching the sequence was "he must still have work to do for the Island." It's suspicious that Miles, the "ghost whisperer" is traveling with them.
I think that the ability to interact with the whispers and ghosts on the island has more to do with altered states of consciousness. Perhaps her head injury allows her to see Christian Shepherd. Perhaps the EM radiation emitted by the island affects their brains. This relates to the work of Michael Persinger, who floods different parts of people's brains with electromagnatic waves. Some of the results are fascinating. Here is a BBC documentary that suggests that particular frequencies make people sense a "presence" and other "paranormal" sensations:

The idea I'm referencing is introduced at about 26:30. Like Kate with her horse and Hurley with the Hurleybird, perhaps they wandered into a pool of special EM waves that set off the temporalis (TEMPORAL = TIME, interesting coincidence) part of the brain. Claire's brain was perhaps made more sensitive, since she had suffered a head injury. Boone and Locke, used ethnogens to induce a vision quest that made their brains more sensitive to the special EM properties of the island. I suspect that Miles has some kind of temporal lobe epilepsy that make him sensitive. While many scientists dismiss the information gleaned from seizures, brain lesions, acid trips, head injuries ad the like, the creators of Lost seem to be suggesting that there is an "other side" that can offer useful information.
I don't think the island can actually "re-animate" the dead. It can only help the living re-experience the dead. I base this on the fact that Ben is behaving as if Alex is lost to him forever. He begins to grieve. Because of the island, he may get to re-experience Alex, in the way he did with his mother, but that doesn't make her any less dead.
