LOST is many things, but first and foremost LOST will always be about the epic battle between science and faith. The universe in LOST seems to work on a certain system of rules. There is a plan and a path for everyone, unfortunately for the universe scientific method is proven fact. So for every action there is an equal but opposite reaction. Which bring us to science. If the universe has a specific goal intended for its grand scheme why the would it allow man kind to firstly evolve to it’s current point, or create and make scientific discoveries which could hinder or set off course its path. The simple fact is, for everything the universe may want, there will be a force equally as powerful trying to bend the world to mans will. That force is science.
This back and forth of the will of man and the will of the universe is so powerful that in turn it created the island. The island is the X factor. The direct result of this war of wars, a place where rules of both sides can be bent, broken and exaggerated to the extent and will of whichever force is at work. Thus creating a playing field for either side to finally end this battle and achieve it’s goal. Man has utilized the island to create scientific marvels that we can only produce under scientific theory, but without the constraints of the universe by breaking the rules stations such as the orchid and the swan were able to be created. The universe on the other hand is bending the rules of the supernatural to reach out to people through ghost and visions, possibly even the will of Jacob.
Understanding all of this I have come to the conclusion, that after the Valinzetti equation was formed, and Dharma was put into planning, the universe started it’s own plan of course correction 40 years ago in a hiking forest near Portland. The day ben was conceived prematurely was the universe starting its new plan to take down DHARMA. Causing his father to meet a man who would offer him a job on the island. This single event is the most important act of course correction, since it leads to ben’s arrival on the island, his mothers death, his fathers abusive behavior and bens eventual destruction of what was once the DHARMA initiative.
The next and final step towards controlling ben was the day (speculated assumption on my part) Annie, his childhood friend, dies losing both her and a child they were going to have. Either continuing or starting a long line of deaths due to pregnancy on the island.
Flash forward to the present time. Oceanic flight 815, the passengers are all somehow connected to one another and some the island. Coincidence, I think not, through years of planning I believe both man with the use of the DHARMA stations and the universe brought specific passengers onto that plane to try and aid in this on going war. A war which we now know is waged between Ben and Widmore. Whom I believe had previously acquired control of or funding of the DHARMA initiative and lost the island during the purge.
Widmore was a part of the people who got Desmond onto the island, because it was very important that he turn the failsafe key, otherwise the entire world, or universe may have been ended. Which is why he even gave Desmond penelope’s address in The Constant, otherwise his plans for Desmond will not be achieved.
With this ongoing battle between forces it becomes clear how the island works as the x factor in all of this, also making it easier to accept the scientific impossibilities and supernatural events that take place. It also works perfectly into the idea that the island has been around for a long time, longer than many may think.
I truly believe the island is none other than the lost city of Atlantis. This idea works perfectly in a number of ways. First and foremost, it would be the easiest and simplest possible explanation which is also logical and could be accepted by the mass public since it is a well known myth across the board. Second not only does it fit in nicely, it also ties in with the shows name hinting that they have had this plan since the beginning of the show. Following those reasons we know the island has original inhabitants and natives, it has healing powers and the natives seem to have longevity never before seen in any man. The people of Atlantis were thought to be a race not only superior to normal man but also of far greater intelligence and technological marvels.
Finally the final pieces to the puzzle are the simple facts that we have now seen hieroglyphics on the stone door in bens secret room which summoned the monster to attack, although he did not specifically control it therefor alluding to it being a supernatural being. We also have the ancient 4 toed statue from season 2. The Island is possibly floating, if not is hidden from the outside world, also going along with the myth of the lost city which can not be found. Although most of all and the final piece which if I am correct is the most convincing is none other than the black rock. Even in season one people have been saying the writers are making it up as they go along, the existence of the black rock in the middle of the island is the evidence they have not. If the island is Atlantis then it would have once been sunken underwater, and it’s ascension could have taken place when the black rock would have hit a shoreline which would now be in the middle of the jungle because! it had yet to fully receded from the water
