So it's pretty much established that there isn't such a thing as coincidence now, right? And everyone brought to the island was brought for a reason.
Jacob as a young boy was experimented on by the dharma initiative and became the way he is now, between space and time, rocketed through every string of string theory, seeing every eventuality that could ever occur (much in the way that Dr. Manhattan can, TPTB called Watchmen the greatest piece of fiction ever), seeing everything but never being able to directly influence people. He lashed out at the initiative, setting in motion the plot to gas/purge them.
This was successful, his childish anger and thirst for revenge was satisfied. But now he misses being human, a trait he lost with the experiments. Realising that if they are started again he will be able to return to the past, the day when he became what he is now and stop it from happening he sets in motion a plan.
Gathering people from across the world, their fates entwined so tight that it is inevitable that they would each run into each other. And then he crashes the plane, on the island the people work towards getting rescued, calling the freighter, another step towards the experiments being reopened and him becoming whole again.
But Benjamin Linus has a plan. When he was first introduced he believed every word of Jacob's, but now after years of obedience has come to realise what the 'great man' is actually trying to achieve. Seeing that the Others (a group of fatalists) would not believe that their idol is an evil man, working to undermine fate and return himself to humanity. So he hatches this plan, involving a man named John Locke. Begrudgingly he take shim to Jacob, knowing that he has not yet been fully prepared. Ben doesn't want him to believe, doesn't want him to see Jacob yet, knowing how powerful his influence can be. But John does see him, and hears him so Ben shoots him.
And now on the island, John is going back with more trust in Ben than ever before, to see the man whose plot they are both going to stop. One of the rules that Jacob abides by is that he has absolutely no influence on the island, except for in his circle of ash. Off of the island he has enough influence to gather 321 people onto a plane and fly it 1000 miles off course.
And that is where drink and drugs come into play. They have played a big part of Lost, Christian Shepherd, Charlie, Widmore, Eko, Locke, Desmond, Future Jack, Hurley's mental asylum days etc.. etc...
Jacob's influence is clouded by drink and drugs, which is why Ben drinks during Episode 9's FF, not heavily, but enough. He knows it will stop Jacob influencing him. Christian Shepherd does too. He has been a presence in many of the character's lives, which is why I believe he has greater ties to the island than we believe, and greater ties to Ben.
These people who has resisted Jacob however have not resisted Fate. Jacob's fate was to become this way and he is trying to change it.
