There is an obvious connection between the people on the island, off the island and those caught in the crossfire.
First of all, let’s talk about the chosen.

They are connected, all of them, I think we will find that they come from the same bloodline, they are related. My reasoning behind this.
The Island has created the bloodline, it has created warriors to help protect from those who would do it harm. The second reason, all those who have been ‘called’ must be brought up by one lone parent.
Ben – His mother dies, his father is going to try and find a girlfriend so the island draws Ben’s father to the island. There because of his statues as a lowly worker he is unable to find a lover or a wife.
Locke – His father runs away when he’s born, his mother looks after him and leaves when he’s an adult, when she leaves his father come back, when he comes back the mother leave. See a pattern?
Aaron – The Physic said as much to Claire, ‘You must raise the child alone’. He saw, saw that Aaron would be special, that he was part of a force that went backwards and forwards in time. When Claire met and fell for Charlie the island killed him, when Claire joined the Locke’s group she gave the child to Kate. Jack doesn’t want to be near the child because he believes it reminds him of what happened, its really the island pushing him away from Aaron.
Ji Yeon – The Island sent Sun away so that she would raise it alone.
Walt – When Walt was born the Island forced Michael away, when Susan Lloyd marries the island kills her, the husband finds a girlfriend and suddenly can’t be around Walt, Walt is then sent to Michael.
Those are the warriors chosen to protect and guide those on the island, it is my belief that Ben knows this and is actively searching for them.

It sounds silly but this is what I think has happened. These people have been called to help protect the island and the planet.

Instead of rings in this case its powers
Heart! - Walt has the ability to call forth animals, I believe that he can call more than just birds, he can call for example Polar Bears, if he knows what he wants he can call it.
Earth! – Locke is the power of Earth, he can knows it intimately, how to live of the land and respect both it and the creatures that dwell there.
Fire! – Ben is fire, he is the brute force of the group, the warrior.
Wind! – It is my belief that Ji Yeon will be wind, what her powers will be are not yet known, but she will have something.
Water – Aaron has the ability of water, again I can not hazard a guess.
The Island is the combined and magnified powers of all five of the Planeteers' powers, and stands for all that is good and environmentally-friendly.
