The Island is a 3D/4D Chessboard similar to one played on by Mr Spock in Star Trek. The 8 main characters arrive thrown onto the board by the plane. There are 64 black and white squares on the chess board, 108 on two etc until over five games there are 320. There are plenty of anecdotal number and name clues that I wont’ bother to mention but the DeGroots used the classic war game of chess to analyse personality and conduct experiments. I am not a great chess player but I believe the plot of the series can be tied in with this concept. Check mate means Death to the King and the main concept of the game. So that explains why it can keep going on repeats. The players are both black and white which explains duplications. The characters have particular traits which comply with they way they interact with fellow players. Pawns can die (go off board) but return. etc etc you get my drift I hope.

In 2Oth century island is expanded by dredging coral to 5 times it previous size by to enable room for extra facilities and secret science experimental station harnessing strength of anomaly in a vortex containment chamber under guise of Dharma Initiative who have powerful military backers. Every 108 minutes a satellite circumnavigates over the island and key must be turned to allow communication window. The island is degaussed (disguised) by using new plasma physics of nobel prize winner Hans O. Alfen but side effects are sickness, insanity and getting stuck in coma like state of duplication. The Minkowski effect. The vortex containment chamber is there to counteract the radioactive particle clouds. But there was an “incident” and the facility was cranked down and caretakers only remaining when plane crashs.
Before this happened and there was a happy little community Ben Linus grew up to become the Islands Rabbit Man. Rabbits were bred for use in testing for leaks. Despite radioactive problems island is considered an idyllic paradise, healing spiritually and adding longevity and residents want to remain. It is a necessarily covert operation and an insular and suspicious society is formed that wants to protect what they have at any cost including genocide of militant factions. Children must be born off island however.
