I was re-watching 'The Constant' up until a few minutes ago and realised something odd. When Desmond Mind-Jumps to past and the present, something triggers its effect. Since he has been exposed to enormous amounts of Electromagnetic Radiation hence, electromagnetism and certain type of objects around him trigger it. It’s not Concrete I know.

Screen Captures I made into one.
I will explain.
The first instant I caught this idea was when as soon as the chopper passes through the storm, the first thing Desmond does, is HOLD onto his SEAT. He grabs it for stability in the turbulence. Obviously the seat and harness are all metallic and when Desmond awakens at the Camp he’s grabbing the bed frame that’s also metallic. Now some of the screen captures that have been posted for the recent episode, not all show the events I’m going to describe, so that requires a re-watching on your parts.
Also, lightening storms are displays of enormous amount of electromagnetism and stored charged, respectively positive and negative charge stored i.e. in clouds and below the storm near the ocean line.
Just before this, you will clearly see Desmond grabbing the framework of the harnessed seat he is fixed into. This is in apropos to when he awakens clinging onto his bed-frame, that’s a metallic bed-frame.
The next time we see Desmundo, is during his crunches in the rain, he jumps back towards his past with his hands shakily trying to remove the harness that keeps him in his seat as the helicopter rides.
After a few awkward moments, Desmond, dazed, wanders around the ship, clinging onto a side frame, evidently metallic and then jumps back to him realising he is standing up and confused. After a few sordid grunts from his fellow men and his superior, he is on a truck, he makes a phone call to Penny; of course you need some pennies, and or change. He goes for his pocket grabbing the cash only to be knocked by a begrudgingly adamant man who nudges him out of the way, he drops the coin, about to pick it up; he jumps.
Back to the boat and more confused like the thousands of Lost fans.
Next time, he is on the hard-deck of the freighter and then taken to a doctor. The doctor of course uses a torch to check for voluntary eye movement. Now, here as you may or may not be aware, Light is Electromagnetic Radiation. Like Ultra-Violet, Gamma, X-ray’s etc. All basic Physics that is all too familiar.
The Doctor flashes, a bright torch onto Desmond’s face and his eyes of course for a test. But that little torch is still emitting EM Radiation, since being a light source. I also understand that a little light doesn’t produce a vast amount of EM Radiation; nonetheless I am still assuming Desmond is still sensitive to changes in Electromagnetism and that presumably causes his jumps. The next time it happens, it happens to be when struggling to make a call, Desmond speaks to Daniel Faraday, another wonderful piece of physics thrown in. Faraday being the surname of Michal Faraday, a Physicist who advanced research in Electromagnetism, EM Induction, and trying to relate light and magnetism being, well related, as did Daniel Faraday in the Episode ‘Confirmed Dead’. Michael Faraday, a brilliant Physicist who came up for a Law for the Electromagnetic Induction. Enough of that; maybe some more Physics later when you’re all asleep.
Then again, you’re all thinking, “Isn’t the Sun an EM Source?” Well, yes, but since sunlight is not always consistent, I assumed that its effect it weaker, as the surface area is also different. Also the exposure to far more closer and intense EM source would trigger an effect. As Daniel said, the light doesn’t quite scatter right and so maybe the effect due to a unusual scattering effect of magnetism and light on the island, gives Desmond a different amount of exposure to it and hence changes the physical properties of Desmond’s condition, he moved from one set of Magnetism/Light rules on an Island to a different set of rules to the Outside world.
Daniel is on the sat phone, a phone like all other phones that emits and receives Radio waves, Micro waves, etc; all of which ARE Electromagnetic Radiation forms. Perhaps trigging a few more jumps.
And finally to wrap-up, three instances where Desmond uses a phone in Daniel Faraday’s lab, a stairwell with metallic bars and a tap that Desmond closes in the Men’s Toilets after Meeting Charles Widmore. Now, I’m not saying that every metallic object or EM Radiation producing device or object instantaneously triggers a jump, but I would assume, like all other things that it takes time and a certain moment to jump. Then again this is a theory, and this is LOST.
The End.
