Considering that whole episode about poisonous gas, I think the titualar word has some significant meaning here. We always thought it was a mind game on Kelvin and Radz, Desmond, the Losties, and even ourselves. What was with the Dharma HAZMAT suits? Huh? Huh? Because gas = death and death prevents button pushing. Dharma scared those Swan'ies (whoever they were over the years) never to exit the hatch, not because it was contaminated, but because some psycho may or may not at some point in time have his finger on the gas trigger.
Why is this important? This type of planning is what most would call a CONTINGENCY plan. It needed to be preserved. Dharma wanted that button to keep being pushed at all costs. Considering the equipment we saw in the Pearl, it's safe to assume one couldn't deduce the Swan's purpose based only on video surveillance. So when Ben saw some newbies on the monitors (when Paulo was using the bathroom) he knew there was a way in. Hence, the net. Get caught in net, see inside of hatch. Surely this Ana Lucia won't dig up a grave? Oh wait, backfire. Send reinforcements (a la Michael)!
Everyone keeps asking "what did not pushing the button do?!?!!". Well, the Naomi is what happened, and Ben predicted that. He knew the Freighter was out there, hence why he sent his "man on the boat" (again, Michael). Obviously Ben couldn't predict when the button wouldn't get pushed, but he played enough mind games with Locke to act as a catalyst towards that end. So did he, or did he not get Michael out before a large explosion of electromagnetic energy was released? Hopefully that will be answered in episode 8. Until then.
