This is not so much about the overarcing story so much as simply Jacob himself.
They have mentioned Charles Dickens quite a few times, and it hit me, that Jacob plays a very similar role to a Dickensian character that bears his name.
Jacob Marley.
We know that Marley and Scrooge were business partners and that Marley warned Scrooge he needed to change his ways.
We also know Time itself played a huge role in The Christmas Carol. Apparitions, ghosts, questions of morality, changing one's present self, but not being able to change the future or the past.
We also have a very Scrooge like character in Charles Widmore. I would have thought it would be Ben, but I think Widmore fits the bill more.
I won't try to take the analogy any further than that, as there is not much evidence that it goes further than that, but I do believe there are definite allusions to a story much like The Christmas Carol, only with Stephen King's The Stand like darkness.
