When Harper appears there were all these whispers - and then she disappears into the jungle w/o a trace. When Hugo is standing outside Jacobs cabin and it reappears to him there are the whispers again. When Desmond comes back from "traveling" he continues his conversation.
My theory is that Jacob and his people have mastered timed travel. That's how can can go here and there and not age - Jacob's cabin is the constant. The whispers are the residual noise they bring back from traveling. Perhaps the flash forwards are just that, characters traveling forward thru time to possible whens. Just an incomplete thought, I have to work thru rest as far as who selected to become "hostiles" - as I believe that's what's happening. Jacob is recruiting.
