We've heard from Lindelof and Cuse over and over about how the universe "self-corrects" itself. It's also known that the electromagnetic properties of the island can cause time shifts and other strange events. And the powers-to-be have also presented us with the now famous "Orchid" video (where a duplicate bunny appears from nowhere). So what does all this mean?
Well, here is my theory: When fight 815 flew over our beloved island an immense electromagnetic charge was dispersed and hit the plane (thanks to Desmond). When that happened the plane split into two identical airplanes. Just like the rabbit in the Orchid video. One crashed on the island while the other crashed in the ocean. The plane that crashed in the ocean crashed in the "real world" and in "real time". We know this because it has now been found. More importantly there were no survivors. The idea of the wreckage being staged by Windmore is just to throw us off.
The other plane it's "twin" crashed on the island of course. Now, here is were things get interesting. As long as our castaways stay on the island everything is fine. that is because our island is in some sort of time anomaly. It's outside of real world/real time. But what happens when the castaways return to the real world, a world that they were killed in a plane crash? Well, the universe must now "self-correct".
When the Oceanic 6 first arrive in the real world everything is fine. Jack is beardless, Sun and baby are fine and Hurley in out of the nut house. Then just like in the movie Final Destination fate starts killing them one by one. Jack realizes this after another one of the Oceanic 6 has died (the funeral from last seasons final). That is why Jack and the remaining Oceanic 6 must return to the island. If they don't fate like the one that eventually killed Charlie will kill them too. You can't be both dead and alive in the same world/time and the self-correcting universe that the powers-to-be keep talking about will make sure of that!
