I've just recently listened to the lost initiative podcast as they recapped Episode 4.08 (MEET KEVIN JOHNSON) and i have to say they've made a very good and very possible point.
I'll start off by reminding all of you that When Gay/Tom A.K.A Mr. Too Friendly arrives in the alley and confronts Michael right before he kills himself, he explains to Michael that the island wont let him die.
I was sort of confused by this and pondered it myself as what it could mean... until i listened to the initiative
they think that the reason Tom says the island wont let him die is because he has a destiny involving the island and he cant die until its completed. Since he left the island early he hasn't yet completed his "Destiny" and must return to do so. I believe that this is very authentic information and it fits with all of the people that have come to the island. I'm going to explain to you how by explaining everyones destinies. I know this will be a very extensive theory but its worth the read.
So lets start off with the Main People (The Losties)
-MICHAEL-
Michael's Destiny has been strongly hinted at, but I've put it together. Michael's leave from the island at the end of season two was known by everyone to only be temporary. We knew at some point he would return and now we know why. the beginning of his destiny involved bonding or rather getting to know his son. He knew he loved him but if the plane hadn't crashed his and Walt's relationship would still be strained as it was when they first met after ten years. So during the first season that was his main task. Next he was supposed to build the raft, because if he didn't then Walt wouldn't have been taken, and if Walt hadn't been taken then Michael would have no reason to have let Ben go after killing Anna-Lucia and Libby. (I'll explain why they were supposed to die later) He had to let Ben go, because if he didn't then Ben would have never let Michael and Walt leave on the boat. Now on the way to whatever rescue "rescues" them. Michael eventually tells Walt that he managed! to get them off the island by killing two women who I'm pretty sure Walt doesn't even know since he was taken before the Tailies were introduced. This strains their relationship even more and it is good that it did, so he would eventually be visited by Tom and sent to the Freighter where (I believe) he completes his destiny, which is saving everyone or mostly everyone from being killed. Now this is going to be hard because as we see at the end of the latest episode, Sayid exposes Michael as Ben's spy, bust somehow i think that the captain already knew this. All in all i think that his destiny will be completed even if it means not saving all of his former friends. Most likely Michael and Sayid will form a truce, somehow come into possession of the helicopter by Frank and ultimately helps the Oceanic Six escape. After this is done he will finally be allowed to die somehow or another and thats why i believe that he is in the coffin in Jack's flashforward.
-JACK-
Jack has very complicated and shroudy future/destiny. But it is important. Before the island while he was working at the hospital he was supposed to expose his father of drinking on the job. He was supposed to do this because if he didn't then his father would have no reason to travel to Australia which means he wouldn't have a reason to go either. This ultimately brings Jack to the island where he finds his father's coffin empty. (this is still a mystery, but I'm 99.9 percent sure that Christian Shepard is dead, but is still somehow connected to the island in some way whether it be through jacob, something from his past, or maybe the smoke monster is just trying to tick jack off.) Anyway after discovering that there is something in the jungle that likes to eat pilots he is now thrown into a world where everybody is looking up to him and its his duty to lead them and protect them, even though he's 50% wrong most of the time. He was meant to resuscitate the air marshal so the! fact that Kate was a fugitive would be known by everyone. He was meant to let Boone die because Boone's destiny had been completed already. After this he was supposed to go with Sayid to the hatch so that he would agree with Locke to blow it up. He was meant to meet Desmond in the stadium so that when they meet again on the island Desmond will remember him and start to believe the story of the plain crash. Another reason Jack was supposed to be on the island is so he could address Ben's wounds and stop a Rambofied Sayid from killing him. Because if he didn't keep Ben alive and he didn't go with Michael to the dock then Michael would never have left the island which in return he wouldn't be rescued from the island. Now the reason Jack removed the the tumor from Ben's Spine is because if he didn't then 1: Kate and Sawyer couldn't have escaped the island and 2: Ben could have never told Michael (on the freighter) that he shouldn't kill everyone on the boat because some of ! them were innocent which ultimately leads to Michael confessin! g to Say id which ultimately leads him to rescuing the Oceanic Six. Now jack was supposed to trust and protect Juliet because if he didn't then Sun would never be warned of the Pregnancy Sickness and she probably would have go to Locke's camp where she would eventually die. Moving on Jack wasn't supposed to leave on the submarine because it is supposed to be Michael that rescues him. Also jack was meant to radio Minkowski with Naomi's phone to let them know they were still alive so the Freighter people would follow through with their planned which results in Jack's resuce. Now in Jack's flashforward we see him stand on a bridge about to jump off. he is stopped though because his destiny has not yet been completed which recontinues with saving the woman in the car crash. At the end of his flashforward he urges Kate that they need to return to the island. Because unknown to him and to us he has a greater purpose.
