Ever since I saw The Pilot, not the first episode of Lost but the actual pilot of Flight 815, in one of Claire's flashbacks from the first season, I always thought there was something more to him.
Then after Desmond "figured out" he crashed the plane, I just couldn't help but think he wasn't the only one involved in this. I mean, what are the chances that him not pushing the button at that exact time would crash that exact plane...unless it was meant to be there in the first place.
Here's my theory: All of the passengers of Flight 815 were meant to be there for a reason. Look at the types of people on that plane; A doctor, a construction worker, a fisherman, entertainers, priests, cops, dentists, all of them have pretty formal occupations that could technically start a new utopian society. There are born leaders and good people at heart on that island, and even new life.
First question - Who would want a plane full of people like that to crash on an island where nobody could find them? People with power and money, namely Charles Widmore, Mr. Paik, and maybe even Hanso himself.
Second question - Why? These people must have had some type of inclination that something catastrophic could occur in the outside world that would need a new, utopian society to flourish.
I've always thought that our numbers (4,8,15,16,23,42) were an equation that counts down to the end of the world. Once it was figured out when it would occur, plans were set in motion that would implicate our Losties without them ever knowing it. Locke not being able to go on his Walkabout, Sawyer being let go from the police, Jack having to find his father, Claire's boyfriend leaving her, Sayid having to track down Nadia, Jin & Sun having to leave, all of that was setup by some powerful and brilliant men.
That plane was supposed to LAND, not crash. The pilot deliberately went off course but he never would have guessed that a large magnetic surge would pull the plane down at an alarming rate. When we first saw The Monster, he seemed to eat the pilot for no reason. Now we know that Cerebrus (a.k.a. Smokey) is the island's security system, protecting it from evil. The pilot had to have been a plant and was evil at heart.
The Powers That Be, not the creators I mean the powerful characters on the show, knew that something was to happen and needed to send a select group of people to that island to protect them. I'm thinking Sun was there because she was Paik's daughter and he would want her alive, maybe the same with Sheppard, and if Mr. Widmore had anything to do with Desmond landing there, he would want his daughter Penny to try and find him so when she followed him there she would also be safe.
So when Desmond and Kelvin were pushing the button, just saving the world, they actually were because had they not pushed the button until that point, our Losties would have never arrived the way they had and the island would have been discovered and their plan ruined.
I know it's a lot to take in, and maybe a little difficult to understand, but I hope I projected myself clearly. I'm sure more will be explained in the later seasons, but after something major happens and the Oceanic 6 leave the island, they need a reason to get back, which is their friends. Once they rescue their friends from the evil on the island, then all will be known. All will be known. Hopefully.
