Okay my theory goes like this, i think that the purpose of the grey dust around Jacobs cabin in Episode 3.20 was to either suppress Jacobs powers or to trap him in one place. I've come to this theory because i was thinking about how Ben says in 3.20 that you Jacob isn't the kind of person you can just go and visit, he has to summon you, which confused me as to how Ben could know the EXACT location of Jacobs cabin if:
-you can only get to him by being summoned
-in episode 4.01 the cabin/Jacob has the ability to teleport around/appear in different locations to different people
So i was thinking, maybe Ben got scared about the whole fact of this dude named John Locke coming to the island and became miraculously healed, so he decided "well this guy could be a threat to me, i need to delve more into this" so Ben sets off on a trek across the island to bring Locke to see Jacob but is interrupted by Rousseau etc etc. but eventually Locke makes his way to Ben by his own will/the islands will.
Now Ben wants Locke to have this meeting with Jacob from the start, so he somehow summons Jacob or just waits until Jacob appears to him, then somehow manages to surround his cabin with this grey powder stuff which holds Jacob in place, so he can't move around anymore. Locke finally gets his audience with Jacob, in which two things happen:
-Ben realises Locke is a threat to him as he can hear Jacob
-Locke hears Jacob say "Help Me"
Now I think the "Help Me" is Jacob asking Locke to release him from this imprisonment of powder that Ben has bestowed upon him. This would explain why Jacobs Cabin has only made a second appearance in season 4, because from some point before Ben ventures across the island to find Locke, Jacob has been trapped in this ring of powder.
Now of course i could be completely off the mark here, but thats what theories are all about right? and personally the powder being around Jacobs cabin and the fact it can also seem to move around now is really bugging me...
Happy to hear any comments you may have.
