There were a lot of parallels between future Hurley in The Beginning of the End and future Jack in Through the Looking Glass. The reckless behavior, the jean jacket, the scruffy appearance, and the use of drugs to try to wash away the past. At the end of "Beginning", Hurley tells Jack that it will do anything to bring them back..
Now I was thinking, what put Hurley on that bender? Seeing Charlie. Dead ass Charlie. Dead ass Charlie was not so dead anymore.. That was it trying to bring Hurley back.. Now, what DEAD person would incite a similar type of madness in Jack? Christian, his father. He alludes to it in Through the Looking Glass, but we all assumed that he was just drugged out of his mind.. But what if Christian REALLY was back, and Christian was it trying to bring them back..
IMO, the island or Jacob is materializing as "ghosts of the past" in the real world to bring the Oceanic 6 back to the island. But not just as visions, but in a tangible way, so that others can see them as well. Jacob is trying to bring them back by manifesting himself as people in the lives of the Oceanic 6 that they had unresolved issues with.
For Hurley, its Charlie, because he never got to say goodbye and he couldn't stop him.
For Jack, its Christian because he never got to officially bury him. He still carries the guilt of his father's death on his shoulders.
Now its interesting that Kate is in a similar situation in Through the Looking Glass as Jack was in The Beginning of the End.. Perhaps she has not had one of these encounters yet. But if she does, imo, it will come in the form of Sawyer. Thats where I see them going with this. I dont think Sawyer survives. At some point, the same thing that happened to Hurley and Jack will happen to Kate. Something is haunting the Oceanic 6 and its their loose ends. On top of all that, I do feel that they had to betray and abandon their old friends in order to get off, and Jacob/Island/Ghosts are trying to bring them back to correct that.
LOST is and has always been about people who are haunted by their past... This theory just expands upon that.
