In keeping with my theory and follow-up previously posted (LOST in Translation: Genetics & the Supernatural Collide), I'm wondering about the mysterious "smoke monster". I believe that once a remotely secluded location was found to establish the genetic research project called Dharma, it became increasingly clear that there were other "forces" at work on the island. You'll recall that Juliet and Kate were confronted by the "smoke monster" in the jungle in Season 3 and they took refuge with the invisible fence. Juliet said something to the effect that they (the Others) aren't sure what it is - but it doesn't like their fence. In it's most dramatic showdown, Mr. Echo (a "man of the cloth" mind you! - though not without sin himself) stares it down. I reflect back again for a moment to all of the current TV shows that focus on the paranormal & ghosts: - spirits are often described (and even supposedly caught on tape) as dark shadow looking masses without distinct form. I believe that the island is haunted - which will reasonably explain several things we have seen that seem so unexplainable. I believe that the Black Rock brought slaves that worked in the mines looking for diamonds, etc. (yet another moral conflict on the island). You may notice that the "smoke monster" seems to appear as though it comes up out of the ground, and even tried to drag Locke into (what I believe are) old mine shafts. If this thing is in fact spirit(s) of deceased slaves/miners, then the encounter with Mr. Echo and the stare down moment, etc. make perfect sense. As a "man of the cloth" - perhaps he posed a threat to the spirit(s) existence? If Echo remained alive, he may have tried to "exorcise" the spirit. I would suspect that if the thing stems from the evils of slavery - it would be pretty pissed off!
