It seems the Others are looking/waiting for someone -- a "chosen" one that is supposed to lead them (to what I don't know). They also seem to believe that this "chosen" one is supposed to kill his/her own father. That is why Ben killed his father separately from everyone else during the purge -- and why he was given such a position of power even though he was new to the group.
It also explains why the Others were disappointed when Locke didn't kill his own father (and why Ben said "he's not who we thought he was") -- and why Locke was given access to Jacob when he showed up with his father's corpse.
Of course, he didn't really kill his father, so he doesn't appear to be the "chosen" one. In fact, the only one who we know has killed his/her own father is Kate. Perhaps she is the one the Others are waiting for?
Just a small theory/observation. Perhaps you've heard it before. It would be great to hear thoughts from others.
