A quick theory on how I think things could play out:
Ben is forcibly taken off the island by Naomi's people along with some of the losties. Locke (with Richard's help), begins to fill the void left by Ben and becomes a leader among the others. Either Locke (or someone) figures out a way to leave and return from the island and possibly sends Richard to kill Ben to keep him from ever returning or Naomi's people kill him for not revealing more information about the island and Jacob. Jack freaks out because Ben could have helped him return to the island. It stand to reason that given Ben had no family left and no one really likes him that no one would attend his funeral. Oh and Jack wants to return to the island to help get everyone else off the island and that's what is eating him up.
Lastly and slightly unrelated, my guess is that Walt is supposed to become to Locke what Jacob is to Ben.
To expand:
If you consider Ben the mayor of New Othertonville, then Jacob is the Govenator of the island. I think that Walt and Jacob are the same type of person or have the same types of powers etc... That's why Jacob is interested in Walt (see missing pieces) as a kind of replacement or apprentice or even a rival. The others are essentially an amalgamation of various groups of island survivors, For example: pre-Dharma (Richard), Dharma (Ben), flight 815 (Cindy) etc... so in a way there is a sort of cyclical relationship that is perpetuated by the island and the others, an evolving society with a common and still as yet undiscovered goal that stretches back for maybe hundreds of years. My guess is that Walt's various appearances seen by Shannon and Locke etc speak to his commune with the island (that he may not yet fully understand) much the same way that I think the various other apparitions (Yemi, Christian, etc...) are not in fact the smoke monster but are in fact extensions of Jacob himself. Perhaps Jacob is the judge and jury and the smoke monster is the executioner I don't know but I think we'll find that Walt is suppose to assume some sort of major role on the island (or at the very least, Locke thinks that he is) and possibly replace Jacob, but its likely that Michael and the losties will interfere thinking Locke is just nutty.
