If any of you don't know, I'm a big fan of ABC's Lost. I love the concept: a plane crashing on a seemingly desert island. But it's left me with a big question:
How did they survive a plane crash with only minor cuts and bruises?
Then, another person arrives on the island, Naomi, telling us that the plane was found, and all the people in it were dead. Assuming she's telling the truth, how could that be?
Lastly, we're shown the Orchid video, in which a rabbit with a number painted on it is being held by Dr. Candle/Wickman/Whatever. Then, out of nowhere, a rabbit appears with the same number. The people in the lab freak out, not wanting the rabbits near each other. Assuming it's the same rabbit, how did that happen?
The answer lies in one of my favorite movies of all time: Back to the Future, Part 1. If you remember towards the end of the movie, Marty travels back to the present after getting his parents to kiss. But, knowing that Doc is killed by some Libyans, he decides to travel back to 10 minutes before he left in order to save Doc. Marty travels back, and witnesses the scene in which he travels to the past.
How does this relate to Lost? IN THIS SCENE THERE ARE TWO MARTYS IN TWO DIFFERENT PLACES! Just like it seems there are two planes (one on island, one at the bottom of the ocean) and two rabbits.
Ok, so they traveled back in time. How? And how did they survive the crash?
This is where it gets a little tricky.
The Orchid video mentions something called a "Casimir Effect." I don't know what exactly that is, but it's of minor importance; just a bread crumb to follow. A simple wikipedia search reveals that a Casimir Effect can be used to create a WORMHOLE, which is simple a 'shortcut' through the fabric of time and space. Here's where is gets fun.
My theory is this: The Dharma Initiative was experimenting with Casimir Effects at the Orchid Station. There were fairly sucessful, until there was an 'incident.' This 'incident' created a wormhole, one end of which was far above the island, the other of which was much closer to the island. Close enough to maybe allow a plane, full of people, to crash on but for some of the people to survive.
The other end of the wormhole wasn't just in a different place, it was also in a different time. I'm guessing maybe a few seconds, or maybe a couple minutes.
The Swan Station protocol was set up to keep the wormhole closed. Every 108 minutes, the wormhole opens. But one fateful day, someone forgot to shut the door, and a little plane entered. The plane travels back in time, is positioned closer to the island so that the people survive, yet the same plane is still hurdling through the air and crashes, sinks two the bottom of the ocean. Two planes and two sets of people, just like there were two Martys and two Delorians.
What's the monster? Who knows. What's the deal w/ the statue? Who knows. But hopefully this solves a little piece of the puzzle for us. :)
