I was sitting outside, freezing my bunnage off during a smoke break when I thought of something I had previously not thought of.
A moon.
Not so much a moon, as in our gray, craters sphere of tidal joy. Oh, no. Think Forest Moon of Endor...only this would be the Watery Moon of Dharma. A separate celestial, life sustaining body that exists well beyond our galaxy.
Now, the facts to back up my theory.
1. The Swan and Orchid
We already know that the Swan was the main source of generation for the travels back and forth between the island and the main world. A lot of people have speculated that perhaps the Looking Glass was this portal. Specifically, Ben even says that since the sky turned purple, they have been unable to come or go. So the SWAN definitely played a role in the transport. Now that the Orchid has been introduced, we have to ask ourselves more questions.
Electromagnetism is something I am very ignorant in, other than knowing that it can cause things to implode when released in great amounts, can suck up every thing in sight before melting down, and that it brought that plane to the island. So what if it didn't pull the plane out of the sky, but instead sucked it through an unstable, uncontrolled, worm hole?
That's right. A worm hole, Stargate-esqu portal through space-time.
2. Desmond's Snowglobe
In the Season 2 finale, Desmond returns from his trip, fatigued and wasted, rambling about sailing nonstop in one direction, only to return to that island. So we must ask ourselves, how can one sail for weeks in one direction, only to return to the departure point without ever turning around? Easy...you sail on a body of water that only has one distinctive land mass. Like a watery moon, with only one archipelago…aka our Island chain.
As a sailor in the US Navy, I have sailed through a corner of the Bermuda Triangle and see first hand some of the cool shit that happens there. Compass offsets and radar mists did little to change the way we navigated and we continued on our Southerly course. Now, lets take into account sunrises and sunsets that have been East to West since the beginning of time as a Nav tool. Desmond did not get Lost, nor did he turn around. He simply circumnavigated this small(er), Earth-like planet.
3. The Listening Post
The polar listening station has historically received two alarms. One when the plane was brought through the warp, and another when Des shut down the Swan. You can remember the two men worried about "missing it again" What if they weren't looking for the island at all...but instead were searching for the point of origin of a terrestrial based worm-hole…a Vile Vortex.
If you're not familiar with Vile Vortices, Wiki or google it. There are plenty of pages out there. The best page I have found is this one: http://www.dprins.demon.nl/convergence/9918.html
A quote from this site talks about the Vortex near Hawaii:
"For example, one of Sanderson's vortices was located near Hawaii. He found a report of a pilot, flying with passengers very near this zone, who suddenly lost all of his instruments as well as radio communications. This is called a "dead zone," or "flying blind," with no ability to radio for help or to determine altitude, position, et cetera, except by "eyeballing" it. The pilot continued to fly for roughly 350 miles in this "dead zone," without being able to connect with anyone on the radio; anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on his speed. Finally, the bizarre experience came to an end, and he was very relieved to be able to get in touch with the tower yet again. We can imagine the panic and astonishment that must have been in his voice, narrowly avoiding danger and wondering what the heck had just happened.
What was so amazing and unexpected was that according to the tower officials, no time had elapsed between his radio contacts! In other words, at one moment he was speaking to them normally, and ten seconds later he was in a panic, telling them that he had flown 350 miles without any instruments! As amazing as it must seem to our "common sense," all passengers aboard this aircraft must have passed into a higher dimensional frequency, where they were not affected by time. The cause of this effect was the hyper dimensional energy that was harnessed by the "vile vortex" they were flying through. "
This could explain Yemi, the Black Rock, and essentially every other object that has passed through the various local vortices, deposited on the island. Now, there is an Orchid aspect to this at the end of the theory that may add a little to this.
4. Dharma and the warp
In the late 60s, we have a research group of scientists and hippies conducting advanced experiments, and setting up a sonic perimeter that hadn't even been thought of yet. What doesn't feel right about this? The tech doesn't match the time!
The truth of the Dharma initiative is that they never came from the sixties, but from a future where humanity was counting down, and they needed a place to go to solve the Valenzetti equation before their time ran out (see Lost ARG). Using future technologies to control the destination of the vortex warp they loaded the island like an arc, or second Earth, then went and prepared for the worst on Earth while trying to find a way to save humanity while also studying the effects of this Island. Utilizing the electromagnetism to control the worm hole's destination, they methodically went back to the past, when people were looking for a change and ready to help create utopia. The problem?...
5. The Hostiles
Just because Dharma controlled the hole, doesn't mean that they were the first to arrive. We know that the Black Rock arrived years and years before them. But existing on a planet where time (in correlation to Earth years) was controlled by the worm holes fluxuation, anything was possible. Thus, one day the Black Rock arrives, the next, Dharma could have shown up...two races, separated by hundreds of years, arriving at the same time. You see where I'm going with this?
6. Smokey!
What is SETI's purpose. What are they trying to find?
How about a living being, so powerful that it is merely a cloud of energy. It has the power to read minds, download thoughts, and kill without worry. Smokey, is more like Smokies...the original, terrestrial beings that belong on that island. The race of smokies are alien beings.
Another plausible theory is that smokey is a warden of time as well as an attachment to the island, judging who stays and who has served their purpose. Thus, the island or time deems it necessary for them to depart.
7. Flash forwards & Time Travel
We know from the last season finale that the portal will be restored, but at what cost, and who will turn it back on?
When Desmond met with that Old Chick, I have no doubt that she is a being more powerful than time itself. The theory I have is based, sadly enough, on World of Warcraft. Their is a group in the game called the Keepers of Time or some such nonsense. They travel back and forth through time to ensure stability in the continuum. I feel that the old woman is part of such a group. They know about the island, the portal, and the way by which time travel happens...and no, it's not with a flux capacitor. Their role is solely to ensure an even flow of things throughout history. So if you went back to save Kennedy, her or one of her "associates" would be there to stop you. Kennedy must die because time deemed it so. They don't control time, but simply ensure that they abide by its power.
8. 108 minutes
EXECUTE! The Swan, as I said was the control station for the gateway, and now I will explain why "travel time longer than 108" was written on the Blast Door Map. The numbers, set by Dharma for the one number off the mark V-Eq, was the combination for the locking mechanism that held the portal stable. Execute was simply the command to inject the numbers into the system to maintain the stability of the warp. If the numbers were not entered, the warp became unstable, and the "incident" happened. The incident was when the original Swan was destroyed when they failed to maintain the stability of the warp, killing the six people who were in the station. We know this from the Blast Door as well, where "6 fatalities"" is written. It was during the days and months following that Dharma rebuilt the Swan, ran the tests for optimum stability to keep the hole open, and set the 108 rule. That is why it was of the utmost importance that the numbers be entered, to keep another shutdown from happening.
Flight 815 was sucked through this unstable hole thanks to Desmond. The fact that they were flying over the Vortex at the time was a time-granted anticoincidence. In accordance with the old chick who talked to Desmond, time is infallible and cannot be changed. Thus it was fate that 815 was in that vortex when the system passed 108 minutes. If there are any questions as to why the plane flew for hours without radio communications before crashing, see the aforementioned quote about the Hawaii incident.
Desmond's shut down of the system at the end of Season 2 had a major effect on the warp, possibly causing a rip in space time, but nonetheless happened in accordance with time itself.
9. NO SURVIVORS & The Orchid
Now this is a new twist on my theory, and one that brings it more in line with the show. We know from both Naomi and Locke's father that everyone on that plane was dead. Door-nail style. What? How can that be? For our answer, lets refer to our friend Bunny 15 in the Orchid.
This is about to make a major rip in the system, but here goes.
The worm hole is a big Xerox machine. When something passes through, it is copied, the copy is sent to the island while the original remains on Earth. The reason everyone says that flight 815 crashed with no survivors is because it did. As the copy was made, and pulled towards the island, the real-world plane tore apart in mid-air and crashed into the ocean killing all on board.
Point two: Juliet was told that she would have to be knocked out for the trip to the island? Why? So her real world self would have no idea what just happened. Think about it, she says that she'll go to the island, goes through the portal, and…nothing. She stays on Earth and nothing has happened…when in all reality the copy was made and sent to the island. Which is all the more reason that she can never go back to the real world, because then there would be two of them existing in the same time-space.
Now, a big jump in this theory is to say that unless you are killed by something on the island, or judged by smokey, you WON'T DIE. Your cancer won't kill you, your health will be restored, and you legs will be made anew. You have the power of immortality (Richard).
But there is a catch…
You can never reproduce. The island won't allow it. Nothing can exist on the island that wasn't copied via the warp. Aaron was born on the island, he already existed in the real as a fetus, thus existed on the island. Any child conceived on the island will not live.
10. Sun's Baby-Daddy is...
Definitely Jai(sp?). Sorry to disappoint you all, but for now, it is how it must be. I know some speculation has led people to the conclusion that one of the season four episodes is a flash forward of Sun and Jin's kid. In accordance with the theory, it cannot be so. Nothing conceived on the island can exist on the island because it doesn't exist in the real world. Like I said above. Sun was preggers prior to getting to the island. It is the only logical answer is accordance with my theory, otherwise she and baby-Jai would be still dead in a few months and couldn't make a flash forward.
11. The Man in the Wooden Box
Yes! Christian Shepherd was dead. You see that, I said WAS. This theory is a big jumper, and hard to imagine, but in accordance with the above, it makes sense. The Island can cure Cancer, make the paralyzed walk and turn a grown man into a weeping baby(Jack). Why is it so inconceivable that this same island can cure death? Now, granted, I have no clue where the "H" Christian went, but we all know that is he NOT in the coffin and Jack definitely saw him walking about. Someone once said that "nothing stays dead on this island," thus he may be alive in kicking, or may be restless projection from the Island itself.
12. The Freighter and Widmore
In another theory, it is stated that Widmore knows about the island, which is in all truthfulness, plausible given his relationship to Dharma. Widmore, Paik and Hanso are all important figures in this scheme. The fact remains that if Dharma originally found the means to control the portal from this side of the warp, prior to the human extinction, then why can't the people who helped build the island still know about. In the first Orientation video, I believe it says that Widmore gave the Degroots a grant. No one grants anything without knowing what they're getting into. Long story short: Widmore knows about the Island, knows of its freakiness and is sending his people to reclaim it using the same method of portal transit that they used with sub.
Now, another problem arises when the Swan is brought into play. The frieghties had to have arrived prior to the shutdown, otherwise, the rift would have been unstable if even viable for transit, and they most likely would have died.
I am still panning out the details of the flash forward and how it all plays into this theory, but I'm really close. Let me know what you think!
Sorry for typos, I'm typing wicked fast at work so I don't get in trouble.
