Be advised that the following contains a theory based on spoilers.
In the following theory I only want to point out a revelation I've had recently after viewing photos on Dark UFO's Spoiler Section of the large dinosaur-like bones to be addressed in Season 4 of LOST. It caught me off-guard at first, but then I started to think about all the potential time-travel related topics on the show, and wondered that if DHARMA did in fact perform time travel experiments, why not have them try to go back to a time before man existed? This would tie into the mentality of fixing man's downward spiral at the root of our creation.
However, in doing so, DHARMA (intentionally or accidentally) encountered prehistoric animals, such as a dinosaur, or some large prehistoric animal that could leave behind such massive skeletal remains. DHARMA is an all-encompassing research organization which also studies animals outside of their natural habitats. So, my premise is that they brought back specimens to study from different times in our planet's history, which would be considerably outside their original habitat. I wonder if those specimens could give birth to offspring unlike humans can on the island?
And what about the "Hurley-Bird?" This twice-seen animal has only shown up briefly two times in our beloved show. And almost immediately after, our characters go about their business as they were, never to again speak of this supposed 16-foot bird (see lostpedia.com for info about this creature on the show). This tactic by the show's writers tells us that they at least know where that bird originated from, since most of us have learned that the writers do not introduce a concept (i.e. polar bears on the island) unless they know for sure why they're there and how it ties into the future story of the show. Therefore, I do believe that the Hurley-Bird will resurface again, if nothing else to divulge its origin and/or purpose being on the show. So, did the Hurley-Bird originate from prehistoric times? (see wikipedia.org for info regarding prehistoric birds) Was it brought back by DHARMA for study? Or rather, is it offspring from another bird which was brought back before? I don't presume to know the answers, but until now, I haven't heard any serious theories about the Hurley-Bird that didn't consist of Smokey manifesting this animal.
Speaking of which, why would Smokey manifest this bird? As far as we know, the intentions of Smokey usually involve the development of the characters as a whole (i.e. Sawyer's bullying boar). And as I've stated above, our characters more or less dismiss the sightings/encounters with the Hurley-Bird. In most other cases, Smokey usually does a better job of making a lasting impression upon our characters than these giant bird sightings. Therefore, I do not believe we can apply the popular Smokey-Manifestation fix-all answer to the Hurly-Bird appearances.
Please, pick apart what I've said here. I haven't said much about the more serious topics/mysteries of the show, but the ever-elusive Hurley-Bird has always piqued my interest on the show. I think that's the case because they haven't really shown much of that feathered mystery nor spoken much about it. I look forward to hearing what you all have to say about my theory......or LACK of one!
