What if Jacob is the island, that is to say that the island itself is alive. Let me elucidate this insanity a little further... There are plenty of holes and assumptions but I'm going to put it out there as a "what if..."
Island. Isolated, tropical, mysterious, bountiful and home to a native (indigenous) people. The island itself (which could be extraterrestrial in origin!!) is an intelligent lifeform and capable of interaction with it's inhabitants. In return these natives protect the island from outsiders who wish to come and exploit and harness the islands inherent abilities and localized phenomena.
In comes Dharma, protagonist of the latter assumption, to interrupt and imbalance the mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship that existed between the island and it's natives. Perhaps then the island, which the natives treated as a deity, stopped communicating with the natives. One could go further and say that the island felt betrayed by it's natives and retracted the "gifts" or "blessings" it previously bestowed upon it's natives. Gifts like eternal youth, elimination of illness disease, etc.
This would certainly give the natives a reason to drive out Dharma, right.
Another twist, what if the island initiates contact with young Benjamin Linus (appearing to him in the form of his dead mother). When Richard (natives) learns that Ben seen his dead mother he knows that the island is again communicating (via Ben) and perhaps this was a means of restoring the harmony that existed before the arrival of Dharma.
The Purge could have been the results of the island and the natives working together, communicating through Ben, using "Jacob" as a conduit, to restore the paradise that once existed between the island and it's natives. And I believe that they succeeded. What was once "Paradise Lost" was now "Paradise Regained"!!
Everything was hunky dory, well apart from one or two loose ends such as Danielle (out wandering the jungles alone if we are to believe her) and Desmond (accidently crashed onto the island and met Kelvin). Kelvin, one of the last remaining Dharma people (apart from Ben obviously) was waiting to be relieved from duty but because of the purge he was left alone in his own personal prison/hell. Delighted to see another human being, Kelvin enlists Desmond's help and you know how the story goes.....
Paradise is once again Lost when the Scottish man crashes a plane (O 815) onto the island..... Again the balance between natives and island is Lost, well maybe not lost but certainly under threat from the Losties' attempts to be rescued. The Catch 22 of it all is that if the Losties get rescued they will reveal the location of the island.
Perhaps Ben was given a tumor by the island or maybe because the harmony is unbalanced the "magical healing powers of the island" are not working. Whatever way you wanna slice it the Others have a vested interested in not allowing the island to be discovered at any cost. An unfortunate byproduct of this is ensuring that the Losties don't contact the outside world. The list, Jacob's list, it could be one of two things, a list of people who are worthy to join Paradise or a list of people who are not, pick which ever you like best!
Maybe (yeah another maybe!) the island is actually communicating with some of the Losties, like it did with Ben. John Locke. A bit strange that guy :-) but he certainly has an affinity for the island. The island has communicated with John through Walt and other "visions" Locke had. When Ben found out that John Locke could hear Jacob he knew that his position of authority and maybe even his place in paradise was under threat so he shot Locke. The island then helps Locke (through Walt) and tells him that he has work to do. I would speculate that Locke has just been given the same offer that was made to Ben, to protect the island at all cost in return for existing in paradise. That would explain why he rocked up and knifed Naomi in the back.
Lastly I would even stretch so far as to say that the reason why Jack is so desperate to return to the island in the flash forward is because all of this is true and he can't take it living in the real world after experiencing Paradise......
Hehehehehe a bit of a stretch of the imagination but what do you think??
OK, that was a bit longer than I intended but it's a complicated (and probably stupid theory) and my first new lost theory in ages! Thanks for reading, let me know what you think?
What do people think of the idea of the island itself being a character? An intelligent, conscious entity?
