I believe that the Monster (aka Smoky, aka Cerebus) may be the result of "the Incident" mentioned in the Swan Orientation video. Smoky's powers include the ability to see individual's pasts and pass some kind of judgement on them. Desmond, after turning the key, now has the ability to see individual's futures. Two "incidents" related to the same stations magnetic anomaly. These two abilities may be exact opposites, or Desmond and/or Smoky has both the ability to see people's pasts and futures and we just don't know it yet. I think both have different abilities because of the difference in the incidents. The original "incident" most likely was a buildup of the magnetic charge with to some catastrophic level, while Desmond's incident was a burst/release of a magnetic charge that caused the hatch to explode/implode. I think Smoky may have been formed from the original incident because either no one was as close to the magnet as Desmond was, or because the charge was not a huge release that created an explosion of the hatch.
Another parallel between Smoky and Desmond occured in the episode two weeks ago when Smoky attempted to confront Juliet. We saw Smoky use a different tactic on Juliet in the form of bright flashes of light....or Flashes Before Your (her) Eyes, the name of the Desmond centric episode. A nice subtle parallel maybe given to use by the writers/producers, maybe not. Either way I think this different behavior by Smoky is somewhat important. Why were there bright flashes this time and not others? Why can't Smoky fly over the sonic barrier? Why don't the others know anything about Smoky (or why isn't Juliet they telling Kate)? I think Smoky might be as big of a threat to the others as Desmond now is (or at least should be). Maybe he is the reason why Juliet is at the beach... I doubt it but if the others find out he has special powers to see the future, they will want to abduct him very, very quickly.
Hopefully this will spark some discussion and maybe we can begin to unravel some of the mystery behind the Monster after three seasons.
