Why can’t women on the island give birth? We are told that it occurs at the time of conception and no one has been taken off the island to be looked after. Ben wants to have a woman give birth on the island, and on the island only, but why? I think he and Jacob are the only two who really know the whole “big picture”. There is a third group of “others” that we have not seen yet (the basis for season 4??) that have been only the island for many, many years (think the four-toed statue and the black rock boat.) This group is the “hostiles” that everyone refers to, not the others. The others occasionally dress as the hostiles to fit in and scare the losties. I believe we, and the losties have never seen these hostiles but the others have. For some reason these hostiles are evil or dangerous (control smokie??) and the others are the good people. Part of me thinks Danielle is part of the "hostiles" and maybe even their leader. Ben kidnapped Alex when she was a baby as leverage to keep the hostiles away from bothering them. That is why Danielle wants nothing to do with the others and BEn forced her to "capture" him to trick the losties in Season 2. Now Alvar Hanso knew about these people and the island; how I don’t know (time travel, psychic abilities, or maybe his ancestors were from the island). Dharma was started by the DeGroots with their main goal being to alter the destruction of the world and earth’s population. People discuss many reasons that man may lead to mankind's own destruction (global warming and nuclear war for example) but one way often discussed is over-population. Now the Degroots either knew that the world would end because of over-population, or just feared that this was the case. Hanso sent Dharma to the island to do their “research” on the hostiles because they were evil (or just primitive) already. Now, unknown to Hanso, Dharma’s “research” involved population control by creating a virus that would make it impossible to become pregnant, and would even kill those who attempted. (think the new movie Children of Men) The “incident” was when they started their plan on the hostiles, but they also released it on themselves and all their scientists. All these hatches served real purposes to the overall Dharma, but were also a way for Dharma to bring in unknowing scientists to come to the island and become part of the experiment. Once Hanso heard of this, he decided to put an end to Dharma, but they were too powerful, so he needed an inside job. Ben (who was born on the island) disagreed with the idea of controlling birth rates because he saw first hand the beauty of birth and the possibilities of new life. Hanso went under the name “Jacob” (which he got from the Bible) and used Ben to form others who were against what Dharma was trying to do, and started the purge. What was the purge? From Webster: “purge- to wash away all that is not clean; to clear an undesired thing or person.” The Dharma was the undesired, so they eliminated them and took over their stuff. They were successful, on the island, in eliminating the Dharma agenda and research. The problem is that Dharma’s damage was done. They had completed their research, knew they were successful and have plans to take this back to the mainland. Hanso now allowed Ben to take over Dharma hatches and supplied them with info and supplies to allow them to do research that would stop Dharma. Because Hanso is now in fear of the power of Dharma and their research he tells the world that Dharma was brought to an end in 1980, yet he still supplies “Dharma” on the island so he can continue the good research. They need someone who has the sickness from the island to give birth. Hanso has many connections across the world and is business partners with Widmore and Jack’s dad, so they arrange a group of people to get on an airplane. He does not tell Ben this, that is why he is surprised. Sun and Claire, because they are pregnant, Kate, Libby, Anna Lucia, Shannon, Nikki, and Cindy are young and in their prime to give birth (how many of those from the tail section that were captured were pregnant or able to become pregnant??) Hanso wants this to be an uncontrolled specimen, he wants everything to go down naturally so they can save the world. I think they are taking so many individuals blood because they are looking for some kind of antidote. Not all done with this theory, but its a start.
