Ben was born on the Island as he stated. The electromagnetic activity of the island caused his mind to grow extraordinarily powerful, or either his condition unrelated to the island. However, being super intelligent, he realized Dharma was failing to accomplish it’s goal. He then created a plan to get things done. First, he turned the people who where living on the island since a long time (the satue builders) against Dharma, and Dharma against them.
Before this both factions were coexisting on the island. He then took advantage of the confusion to get his hands on Cerberus or Smokie, (his original purpose as conceived by Dharma is left open), which he knew he could use as a “mind reader” (Smokie is the “magic box” wich he is speaking to Locke about on 3x17, it’s like he knew of Locke’s father by reading his mind, and captured him trough contacts with the outside world). He then could combine his hability to manipulate, perhaps also reinforced by his brain washing techniques, to the fact that he could know exactly what was on people’s mind.
This way he was able to get people to do exactly what he wanted. He told the actual others (maybe some original inhabitants of the island, plus ex-Dharma, plus another brainwashies) that they were building a better tomorrow (wich we will see is not completely a lie). He also induced the number 2 person in Dharma initiative to create a virus…what we are not told is that the Virus is created to infect ONLY pregnant women, as a tool to control population.
For Ben, however, the Virus has another meaning, by getting humans sterile, it forces the others to “expand”, searching another childs and people from outside to fulfill they purpose of saving the earth by following HIM. He can later brainwash this people. By converting kids he is controlling the future. This way, with time, he will brainwash more and more people, transforming the entire world in “others”. This society, following him as a perfect being, can not destroy itself, and then he will have changed the values of the equation avoiding self destruction of the human race.
A further implication of this theory is that they’re not being rescued because of the island being QUARANTINED because of the presence of the virus, as Dharma had contacts with the Global Welfare
