I recently went back and watched some of the episodes from Season 1. I watched the episode where Locke is playing backgammon with Walt and later in the episode, a black and a white bead are found in a leather pouch along 'Adam & Eve' in the caves. Locke also discussed the theme of good vs. evil, dark vs. light, black vs. white. Now on with my theory.
What do we know about the "Smokey" the smoke monster? Not much. We've seen the dark smoke kill the pilot and Eko, it also grabs ahold of Locke's leg and drags him. The smoke monster had also killed Shannon in Boone's hillucination. We can also suspect that "Smokey" has been scanning minds - Eko and Locke.
Following the theme of good vs. evil, and dark vs. light, I began thinking. We've been shown a very mysterious cloud of DARK smoke, and we know that it's deadly.
Enough with what you already know, here's my theory: There are two "smoke monsters" a good one and a bad one AND we've seen them both. The bad one I've described above in all his appearances. I'll name him "Bad Smokey." To balance Bad Smokey with good, a second smoke monster has been roaming the island. "White Smokey" we've seen a lot of. This one has been messing with everyone by recreating a specific figure important to person's past. White Smokey has lead Jack to the Caves (good), he has helped Hurley cure his insanity (good), he has also helped Kate and Sayid cope with their pasts, the horse and the cat (good).
And most importantly, he's recreated Vincent, vital to Walt's stability. Vincent then fills the void in Shannon's life when Boone dies. In season 3, he gives Hurley the keys to the Van - ultimately giving hope to Hurley and Charlie. (++++GOOD).
This might be pushing it, but I also believe that "white smokey" helped everyone survive a PLANE CRASH with superficial wounds.
More... (sigh) Although there's no proof to this, I believe that "white smokey" could be causing the healing on the island. This might explain why Ben isn't healing as fast as expected. Therefore Locke, Rose, Jin, and whatever else I missed, have had contact with White Smokey without knowing.
