There are 3 groups on the island: Losties, Dharma, the REAL Others.
Losties as you know came on Flight 815 have been doing a good surviving on the island – mainly due to the faith of the remaining few.
The Real Others are natives to the island. They’ve been on the island for a long time and are big into magic and other fun “native” things (Think 4 legged Statue). Smokey is a part of the Real Others – not Dharma, which explains why its able to mess with peoples heads and bring about past memories, and even manifest some of them. His main job is to weaken the losties by bringing about past failures and troubles. They're also responsible for the outside world not being able to see the island
Dharma consists of mostly scientists and militia. They came to the island to try to figure out both how the natives magic works, and also how to become immune to it (think immunization). This is the reason why they have a living station on another island (safe from natives magic), why they have a sonic barrier fence (protection from natives and even smokey perhaps), and why their other locals were underground or hidden.
When Dharma came, they discovered the natives were malign, and even resorted to murder. Dharma destroyed the statue, which they all worshiped, and the Real Others then prevented Dharma from ever being able to leave (hence the “illusion” of the sub as a means to escape the island). Pushing the button and releasing the electromagnetic field was one experiment to try to stop smokey, and actually led to bringing in the losties - whoops.
Jacob – originally with the Real Others – had a vision of a better life. Because he was into magic and all that other fun stuff he was able to see the future, and see who would bring about justice for Dharma (ie the list). He was killed in the battle between Dharma and the Others, and survived by his only son – Ben (hence his manipulative powers and that he was born on the island). Dharma began to trust Ben as a leader because of his power over people and his will to defeat the Real Others. Ben enjoyed this because it allowed him to live like a real human, not like the dirty jungle people the real natives were.
