Whatever the Others are doing, they still have faith in it. There is no armed rebellion or mass exodus. Still, Mikhail left. Juliette wants to leave.
Ben says "his people" want to be there, even though they NEED to believe they can leave. Is he deluded? Are they really HIS people?
Juliette's sign said "SOME of us want change..." Is that change the freedom to come and go? How many others want to leave, but Ben won't let them? Would Ben kill them if they said so? He did say that the only reason he was letting J/J go was because he had to be seen to keep his word.
How many of the Others are still loyal to Ben? To the Cause? Is Ben just keeping the rest terrified? Is Tom loyal? To the Cause or to Ben? After the "ear" reference, are we sure about Tom?
Obviously, not all are loyal to Ben, but maybe they stay for the Cause. What Cause is important enough to make those recruits stay? If the island gave them perfect health or long life, etc. they might want to stay, but wouldn't they want family/friends with them? Is that the change that some of the Others want? To bring their loved ones? And Ben only lets the "good ones" come?
Good for what? Good like Locke, in tune with the island? Good like Walt, with abilities?
Walt. Walt and his abilities. Somebody else has/has had the same abilities that Walt does -- probably Jacob. (The Others tested the children; they knew what they were looking for.) The Others need such people to do their work/advance their Cause. Additionally, they are trying to create more people who have the same abilities, hence Juliette's presence.
Ben touts the Cause, but in reality, he wants to manipulate them and have more control. The island knows that, and has abandoned Ben, hence the tumor.
(OR Jacob has enough control of the island to decide who gets the healing power. HE has abandoned Ben, hence the "what does it feel like to have your own father want to kill you?" question.)
The Cause remains. It's Ben that's screwed.
