Some time ago by accident the island was discovered. The island itself was strange – it was almost impossible to leave it. You sail from it to the east - you sail back to it from the west. This works for every direction you might choose. The island existed in the space that was bent in the form of torus. So it was also almost impossible to get into the island because is not visible to the outer world because bent space around the island work kind of like cloaking device. There was only one way out - bearing 325 from specific point on the island (now called Pala Ferry dock). The only way in was exactly opposite direction.
Soon people discovered that while on the island, in the state of unconsciousness, they are able to contact their past self. Which results in the phenomenon we call déjà vu. Some specific individuals however are able to do a little more. They are able to send their projection through time and space and contact anybody, anywhere, anytime. Those people are not enslaved by space and time.
This opens great opportunity to avoid every disastrous event that could happen to our civilization. Simply go to the island, and send the message through time. With this in mind DHARMA was founded.
There is a catch though: if you contact the past and change it, universe will soon find the way to correct its course. Whatever you change, it will eventually happen a little later in similar way giving pretty much the same results. As stated by Mrs Hawkings.
Through expoeriments DHARMA people found out that course correction is steered by two things. First of them is fate. I’d say fate is connection between present and the future. So present knows the direction it should go. And the island is this connection. It is island not only on Earth. It is the island in spacetime. So you have to eliminate the fate. And here comes the answer to first question: every 108 you have to execute the procedure that somehow eliminates the fate.
But there is other thing that causes course correction, and it is free will. So you have eliminate it to. But how to do this. You have to find the person whose actions started the chain reaction and do whatever it takes to stop this person from doing it. It’s simple, you say, lets kill him. Or put him into jail for life. But you cannot do such thing without society to notice. And still you have the fate avoiding procedure to be executed. So you change this persons life a little bit. Just enough for him/her to think that he is changing his life at will. Changing in the way that he ends up on the island pressing that damn button. And this was answer to the second question.
So we have clever plan. Now we need to test it. Let’s send some people to the island and check what happens if person is closed in the hatch, told that there was experiment that went wrong and now he saves the world by pressing that button. He is also told that if something went wrong you execute failsafe discharge by turning the key. And that was the experiment itself.
But something happened in the future that actually caused this whole changing the past procedure to be executed for real. We found the one responsible and we change his life. This person happened to be Desmond. So we know he went to Widmore’s office to ask for Penny’s hand. He was educated, he has military experience so he was great candidate. But getting into Widmore family was bad thing. So we go back and kill his father. At first nothing much changed. He just has to quit university, cannot join the army. But then he’s rejected by Penny’s father. So he makes a choice to prove Widmore wrong about him not being the great man. He joins the army, but ends up in jail. So he wants to win the Widmore’s sailing race. He needs a boat. And here “accidentally” he meets Libby who gives him one. We know the rest. He ends up on the island pressing the button. World’s saved.
Well for now. Because system failure happens which adds new elements to the equation. Resulting in destroying the computer. So failsafe is executed not to everything go ahead automatically. But to inform whoever’s in charge that something went wrong. Thus we have the answer for the third question.
Also one more thing went wrong – Desmond contacted his past. And since for the last 3 years on the island he wanted to go back to Penny, when he realizes that he is in his past, he tries to change it. That’s why Mrs Hawkings was so surprised. She didn’t expect that. That’s why she must convince him that he has to go to the island to save the world. So he ends up on the island anyway.
Ok now let’s think what the hell is Smoke Monster. He is time guard so nobody living on the island would try to change his past. Because the fate is turned off, it’s only free will of the person on the island that controls worlds future. If you change something you must die.
And the Others? They are scientists who want to find the solution not by changing the past, but by helping people of the original timeline. Since they are working on procreation, I say in original timeline people extinct due to not being able to procreate. This was cause either by radiation after nuclear war or by some kind of virus. So if Other see themselves as “good guys”, then who are the “bad guys”. Bad guys are people who used time changing feature of the island for their own good, not for the humanity. Question 4 and 5 - checked.
But there is some more:
How come Locke is able to walk? Well: he could walk in original timeline. He looses ability to walk as a result of action taken in his past in order to prevent him from destroying the computer. Things we see in flashbacks are not always in the characters past. Sometimes they are in future past which is going to happen in order to prevent destroying the computer. And prevent interfering with things happening on the island.
Why there was no replacement for Kelvin Inman? He was subject of the pre-test. Later DHARMA must have prepare real situation so the kind of left him there.
I think there is the third thing that controls everything besides fate and free will. It is accident or luck. This is like in quantum mechanics. There is always possibility. And people at DHARMA simply forgot about it in their calculations. Like it was accident that Desmond caused system failure and the crash. Or button may turn off fate in outside world but fate still works on the island.
