Has a Bermuda Triangle based theory been debunked by the writers/creators or simply sidestepped? (Vile Vortices are twelve areas distributed more or less evenly around the globe that are alleged to have the same qualities as claimed for the Bermuda Triangle. Five are located on a latitude near the Tropic of Capricorn; Five on a latitude near the Tropic of Cancer; and one each at either of the Poles. The most well known Vile Vortices are the Bermuda Triangle itself, the Devil’s Sea near Japan, and the SOUTH ATLANTIC ANOMALY)
The South Atlantic Anomaly (or SAA) is the region where Earth’s inner van Allen radiation belt makes its closest approach to the planet’s surface. The result is that, for a given altitude, the radiation intensity is higher over this region than elsewhere. The SAA is produced by a “dip” in the Earth’s magnetic field at that location, caused by the fact that the center of Earth’s magnetic field is offset from its geographic center by 450 kilometers (280 miles).
Could the Earth’s natural radiation and magnetic dip — drastically intensified in this area — have healing powers? (Rose / Locke / Jin for example)
Could the ‘Electromagnetic Anomaly Detected’ on the computer screen of the two Portuguese men in Season Two’s Finale actually be the South Pacific Anomaly (Formosa Triangle) in which the Losties are trapped?
The Van Allen Radiation Belt is a torus of energetic charged particles (plasma) around Earth, trapped by Earth’s magnetic field. The Van Allen belts are closely related to the polar aurora where particles strike the upper atmosphere and fluoresce.
This would explain the ‘sky turning purple’ and the sound we hear when Desmond uses the fail-safe to presumably destroy the hatch and release the electro-magnetic energy. Take a look at the pictures at wikipedia.org under ‘aurora’.
Many have commented on the fact that entering the numbers every 108 minutes has a relevance to the length of time it takes a satellite to orbit. Which makes this part of my theory even more interesting and legitimate:
The South Atlantic Anomaly is of great significance to satellites and other spacecraft that orbit at several hundred kilometers altitude and at orbital inclinations between 35° and 60°; these orbits take satellites through the Anomaly periodically, exposing them to several minutes of strong radiation each time. The International Space Station, orbiting with an inclination of 51.6°, required extra shielding to deal with this problem. The Hubble Space Telescope does not take observations while passing through the SAA.
This may explain why planes were able to fly over the island while the button was being pushed and not when there was system failure. (See Season 3 Teaser 4 at lostlinks.net and note the clip we see of Sawyer in the ‘jail’ — you can clearly hear what sounds like another plane about to crash or flying VERY low..)
And finally; Could the mythology behind the island be Pre-Islamic or Islamic, rather than Greek? (as some have suggested because of the four-toed statue)
The Formosa Triangle is a roughly 5 million square kilometer region of the Pacific between Gilbert Islands, Taiwan, and Wake Atoll, where, allegedly, ships frequently disappear under mysterious circumstances. It is supposed to have similar paranormal properties to the Bermuda Triangle. According to Muhammad Isa Dawud, it also has an increased activity of the jinni.
(The word “jinn” literally means anything which has the connotation of concealment, invisibility, seclusion and remoteness.)
More on Jinn or ‘Jinni’:
Jinn in pre-Islamic mythology
For the ancient Semites, jinn were spirits of vanished ancient peoples who acted during the night and disappeared with the first light of dawn; they could make themselves invisible or change shape into animals at will; these spirits were commonly believed to be responsible for diseases and for the manias of some lunatics. Types of jinn include the ghul (night shade, which can change shape), the sila (which cannot change shape) and the ifrit.
The Arabs believed that the jinn were spirits of fire, although sometimes they associated them with succubi, demons in the forms of beautiful women.
Jinn in Islam
Muslims believe that jinn are real beings. The jinn are said to be creatures with free will, made of smokeless fire by God (the literal translation being “subtle fire”, i.e. a fire which does not give itself away through smoke), much in the same way humans were made of a metaphorical clay.
The name is not used by the inhabitants of the area, nor does it appear on nautical maps.
