The Losties were originally part of the Others (Dharma), but they have had their memories altered to incorporate false memories.
The plane they were on, which their minds told them had left from Sydney, had in fact just taken off from a runway nearby (just because we haven't seen one doesn't mean there isn't one). Oceanic Airways is connected to Hanso and therefore Dharma. The Others had captured an Oceanic plane which landed on the island (delivering a new washer and dryer to the hatch occupants probably) and planned to use the plane to leave the Island. The only plausible explanation for there being survivors from the crash is that they had either just taken off, or were just landing. We also know the plane was much lower in the sky than it should have been if it were at cruising altitude. The Losties perception of the flight and the crash are different to the reality.
The Losties were given different identities, as it was necessary to try and avoid them being found by the Hanso Foundation and being interrogated to reveal vital information about Dharma's actvities. Although Hurley thinks he is a millionaire, he would not go back to a lavish lifestyle. We will have this confirmed when in Hurley's future flashbacks, we will find out that he has decided not to use any of his cursed money. This will account for him not having access to millions of dollare when he was due to return to the outside world. A similar "get-out" clause could be put in place to allow Kate to go free from the Marshall once the plane had landed.
It was essential to have their memories of the island, Dharma, etc replaced as they were leaving the island, and the island must remain top-secret at all costs.
The whole Dharma Initiative went wrong with the realisation by the Dharma peaceniks that their creation of Cerberus (Smokey), a highly unstable mind-scanning mechanism which they had under control, was to be used by The Hanso foundation as a weapon to perform a kind of "ethic cleansing",identifying and removing people who may be a drain on resources or a threat to Hanso, and coincidentally reducing the population dramatically - thus altering one of the core values in the Valenzetti Equation.
The Dharma guys decided that rather than let Hanso get control of Cerberus (Smokey), they would let it go free, "The Incident". After the Incident, the EM field and the numbers were activated by the Hanso guys in the hatch. They are sent there on a "need to know" basis, and all they know is what they have seen in the training films, which have been edited heavily to serve this purpose.. The Dharma scientists could not leave the island up to now, or they would be captured by Hanso and used to try and recapture Cerberus, so they live on the island(s) as self-appointed guardians.
Hanso automatically keeps sending food parcels to the people in the Swan hatch, as it is necessary to keep the EM forcefield in place to keep the island, the Dharma experiments, and Cerberus a secret. The people in the hatch are told when they are sent to the island that the people on the island are "hostiles" and carry a virus. They are provided with a heavy arsenal. They are not part of the original Dharma group. They are ex CIA agents, or retired Army guys, used to doing a job without asking many questions. The replacement teams have not been sent in recent years due to an internal power struggle between Alvar Hanso and his second in command allowing certain affairs to be overlooked.
Maybe some of the Others wanted to try and leave, and some felt it necessary to stay. For their own protection they had to have all memory of Dharma, and the island removed. They were going to use the captured Oceanic plane to escape their self-imposed exile. The flight for most of them was to signify a new start.
After their new memories are put in place, they no longer recognise their former Dharma peers. When the plane crashed, the losties are frightened and hostile, and the remaining Others are trying to stop them finding out too much, or escaping the island and letting the outside world know of it's existence. They are trying to pick Losties off one-by-one to try and de-programme their false memories, to re-assimilate them back into the Dharma group. Hence the "good ones" - the ones that will be more productive, or easier, or more worthwhile to do. The memory deprogramming can only be done one at a time, they cannot deprogramme many people's memories at once. Their resources are not large.
The tragedy is, when the Losties memories are deprogrammed, they will realise that everything they thought was real in their life was a lie. And that their bold plan to leave the island failed, and their fate is to stay on the island.
