This is probably a long shot, but I read a book a few years ago that I just fell in love with. It's called "Noggle Stones." It was published a year before "Lost" premeired, so there could be a connection. Anyway, it's about a fantasy world being merged with the real world. There's lots of weird philosophical stuff behind it including some school of thought called Non-Logical Thought. Supposedly it allows people to alter reality. The author has a web site and there used to be a trippy background story on the site. He's taken down the link, but the page is still there.

He claims that "Noggle Stones" is a translation of some old scrolls he found and that the world is repeating the same cycles over and over, like a needle going over a record.
Maybe this is something to do with the island on "Lost." Maybe Dharma is working to merge different dimensions. It might explain the visions some people have had as well as "Smokey." Maybe Dharma is getting ready to put the needle at the beginning of the record? Might explain some of the record player symbolism we'd seen in the hatch in the second season, and in the Others' community this season.
We know the writers on Lost enjoy anagrams, so on a lark I also came up with the following anagrams for "Noggle Stones."
LOST GENE GONS - Perhaps gons could be short for Polygons, refering to gene polygons? We know from previous episodes that Dharma was doing genetic research on Polar Bears. And in "Noggle Stones" there's an evil alchemist who merges humans with animals.
LOST GENE SONGS - I can't recall, but were there any songs featured by artists named Gene? If so, that could be significant.
LOST GONE GENS - Gens is an ancient Roman word for clans or families. Could the Others on the island be part of a large family? Could they be related? If not naturally, then maybe through Dharma genetic experiments?
Here's a link to an article about the concept of the Roman Gens.

Also an anagram for the last name of the book's author (Wil Radcliffe) is DARE CLIFF. Maybe a reference to the episode where Dave tempted Hurley to jump of the cliff?
Again this is a long shot. The book is pretty obscure. But with all of the hidden stuff on this show, it might be worth checking out.
