The lost-island is like Vegas: do what you want whenever you want. Let me explain.
I think in the fifties an army in the pacific (most probably USA) found the island and his special features. trying to figure out what to do with the island the American government (or a part of it-DHARMA made especially for this?)decides this place would be perfect to make it into a scientist/psychologists/... wet dream. if you choose to go to the island you are given the possibility to study whatever you want on whatever whenever (you catch my driftà you want.
The catch is once you come to the island you don't leave.
Going by the spirit of the seventies (cold war-nuclear treath-Vietnam etc)there was a group of scientists who decided that they would dedicate their life to science. Because of the nature of certain experiments the public must not hear of this place (similar to Guantanamo bay :))and the government carefully guards the island. After the accident some scientist start to question their 'everything goes' mentality. An uprising starts and the scientist form 2 groups (the good ones and bad ones - but which one are the good?).
The fraction that wants to continu what they've started still get all the information they need from the government. The government gives everything to keep everyone there and keep it a public secret.
Now years later the children from the scientist should follow in their footsteps and there is where the rebellious nature of mankind kicks in.
I think that the others are now in a time that there are certain people who still follow the spirit of the original researchers and a small group that start to question wether they really should give up their life for something their parents started. With our losties on the island the urge to leave the island is slowly coming.
When someone leaves the island (like Michael) he gets picked up by the government outside the protective barrier (whatever it is) of the island. He or she will proably gets thrown int the slammer or a Mental institution (seen that before!)
I rest my case
PS: out of a gazillion lost-viewers there will probably be someone else posting something similar. No offense dude/dudette
