I don't generally like to write theories about mythology and the mystical elements of Lost. Science is easier to predict because it generally has rules. The writers could be making the mythology up out of thin air so I generally try to avoid the subject and just watch them tell their story.
However, I had an idea that I wanted to share and see if anyone else here has anything they can add.
Ever since season one there has been a lot of focus on family issues and especially the role of fathers. Locke/Cooper, Jack/Christian, Penny&Desmond/Widmore, Ben/Roger, Kate/Wayne, Charlie/Simon, Thomas/Aaron, Hurley/David, Jin&Sun/Paik, Miles/Pierre, Walt/Michael, etc, etc.
No one can deny that this has been a major theme throughout the entirety of the show.
We also know that children in the show have always had a role of major significance. From the children dying on the island at birth to Walt and Aaron.
I'm not 100% sure what my theory is here but I am wondering if maybe the children of the candidates are somehow a loophole.
Linus was 117. What if Roger was the candidate and not Ben. Is this why Ben was able to kill Jacob? MIB had to go through a lot to convince Ben to kill Jacob of his own free will. What if Ben always had the ability to kill Jacob but he just had to be pushed to do so.
This could also have something to do with why something was killing the unborn of all of the people who had been brought to the island. It could also help to explain why it was so important for the others to round up any children that came to the island.
What made me start thinking about this is that Jack looked into the mirror in the Lighthouse and saw the places where Jacob met with each of them (Sawyer's church, for example). However, he didn't see his own apartment or even the hospital where Jacob met him. He saw his childhood home. His father's home.
What if Christian was the candidate? What if Jack is now the only off-spring on the island now capable of killing MIB?
I'm not sure if this makes any sense. I'm not a big mythology buff so I am not sure if there are any Egyptian or other mythologies that deal with the subject of a child killing the parent. Does anyone else think there might be something to this?
Thanks.
