Soooo the characters have been brought and “observed” by the others in accordance with Jacob’s wishes, which I’m starting to think is to find those who are generally good people and will make the right decisions. It’s a test of one’s self.
This, I believe, is to counter Mr. X, whom I think is the facilitator of the corruption, fighting, and destroying he speaks of that the Island has seen of humans previously. He tempts them, tries to manipulate them, into doing the wrong thing, therefore adding to his own statement “it always ends the same.” (probably because of whatever grudge he holds against Jacob).
What happens then? The end of the world, and the beginning of a new one/reality/universe/timeline, whatever you want to call it (course correction? Reincarnation?). Only thing is is that these “offspring” universes keep ending due to people’s bad choices, along with X’s influence/apparition-ing. This is why the Others are VERY cautious with newcomers; they want to see if they may be “manipulate-able”; vulnerable to the old jedi mind trick (then again, there’s no accounting for X’s influence on the others at times either [like him appearing as Ben’s mom and thus Ben getting Richard’s attention]).
Jacob is the godlike being privy to free will, and this made me think of something really interesting. If X says “it always ends the same,” let’s assume that he’s talking about these multiple ends; this loop with different scenarios over the course of time playing out with the same end over and over. Jacob says “it only ends once, everything before that is just progress.” I thought of the idea of fate vs. free will here. If fate is predetermined, free will can’t exist. I disagree. If we are to consider a higher being that is above us in every aspect, then free will can exist, and may be what that higher being wants for us. However, if he is omniscient, then he knows what choices we will make, therefore allowing both concepts to exist to a degree.
When applied to Jacob/X, I started to think that this may be the reason Jacob seems to be a step ahead of him (and if my theory of “offspring” realities is true, why this is so, because he has something to do with each one starting again and things being just a tad different, [“progress”]). If Jacob is omniscient, or at least able to see all of these possible realities, and X is only able to muck up one at a time, then Jacob is aware of X’s every move.
Jacob, if we want to see him as a sort of savior, would’ve wanted X to relent and see the good in people on his own, and therefore did not interfere with his actions. However, I’m thinking Jacob has done little things here and there that will result in proving X wrong once and for all, with a little “you killed me but see? You’re still wrong because they can do good, and this is what I’ve been working to try and show you all along,” which leaves it all up to the choices of the cast we know and love. Perhaps this one END will be the prevention of the end of the world(s), and freedom from this Ben-ish “tempter,” through the course of the right choices?
Goes to show how maybe the characters are suffering because of this fight Jacob and X are in. Wouldn’t it be cool if Jack and Locke become friends and the new island-guardians? Does this explain why certain people who are dead can still be seen? Is that because of now 2 different realities merging since one is destined to finally not end when this headache-inducing show finally concludes?
Granted this sporadically came from my own imagination due to my 5 year frustration and nerdiness with the show lol, but don’t it make some sense? Does anyone have anything to add?
