While watching the season 5 finale, certain behaviors on the part of Juliet seemed out of character. I thought it was odd she would change her mind about leaving the island, odd that she would not fight to maintain her obvious loving relationship with Sawyer, and odd that she would let the last three years of her life go because, "sometimes people are not meant to be together."
Sawyer's looks towards Kate did not change his feelings toward Juliet as evidenced in the final scenes of the episode. If this is the case, then what did Juliet mean by "some people are not meant to be together" and why did she bring Sawyer back to the island when he was clearly ready to stay on the sub and get rich betting on the Cowboys in the '78 Super Bowl?
Answer: because she has read Sawyer's file and knows what he is supposed to do, and it does not include living happily ever after with her. In season 3, she told Kate the others had files on all of the 815 survivors. She had extensive information on Jack, his father, and his ex-wife.
In the episode, One of Us, she confronted Sawyer and Sayid, about some of their past actions. While Sayid's military record may have been available, it always bothered me that she had knowledge of the murder Sawyer committed days before boarding flight 815. Obviously the Australian authorities were unaware of this or they never would have deported him? How then did Juliet obtain this information? She read it in his file. The same file that gave Locke the insight as to the identity of the real Sawyer. Again, how did the others get this information?
Answer: Because Sawyer and the others survived the incident of '77, joined the others, and have resided in the Temple providing Ben with valuable information he will use to always stay one step ahead. They would also provide information on the survivors of flight 815, including themselves.
Juliet selflessly decided at the last minute that Sawyer was supposed to fulfill his destiny on the island, and that "they are not meant to be together" despite loving each other. Michael once commented that Sawyer was either a hero, or he wanted to die. Little did he know it at the time, but it was Sawyer's destiny to be a hero and Juliet was aware of this. Hero's don't invest in Microsoft and get fat, they save the world. Juliet's sacrifice will be a defining moment in the show.
