This is a theory to counter all the Alien theories as of late:
Now first off I have to explain what I think happens as a result of time travel on Lost. I may be wrong, but it makes sense to me, and it is the crux of this theory so bare with me.
I believe on Lost when you Travel to the Past, you don't de-age, for example; if you were born in 1979, and you left 2009 to go to 1985, you would not de-age to six years old, you would still look thirty, and there would be a six year old version of you, running around and playing with G,I, Joes somewhere. With that said, if you got stuck in 1985, or if you decide to live on from 1985 you would continue to look thirty years old until you reached 2009, then you would resume aging again, or if you left 1985 and traveled back to 2009 you would resume aging again.
Now with that business out of the way, I hope you enjoy this theory:
I think that it is more likely that Jacob and Richard are from a future that is totally corrupted and on the brink of destruction, and in an attempt to save the world as they know it, they time travel to our ancient past to help humanity, but by interfering they unwittingly cause the corruption and destruction that threatens their own time.
By this I mean that they help the Egyptians build their pyramids, so the Egyptians start worshiping them as gods and build temples to them, then they leave Egypt and head to the middle east, and help a man by the name of Abraham, he then starts to worship them and creates Judaism, which eventually leads to Christianity, then they appeared to a Man named Mohammad which leads to Islam, I think you see where I'm going with this don't you.
So after all that, Jacob and Richard find this remote Island that is full of marvelous energy, and rare properties, but there is one problem, it is full of hostile Natives that will need to be controlled, so they use some of their future technology and wow these natives and tell tales of how Jacob is the God of this world, and that Richard is his Prophet, and these native have no choice but to believe them because they seem "Magic" to them.
So after gaining control of the Natives, Jacob tells Richard to Pick from them a leader that will do his bidding. He then tells Richard to give the Natives a set of rules to live by, and that if any of these rules should be broken the punishment will be banishment from the Island. Jacob through Richard also has the natives build a Temple, which houses all of Jacob's and Richard's Equipment from the future.
All of this is of course Fake from Jacob's and Richard's perspective, but is necessary to have complete control of the Island so that Jacob can harness it's powers.
As time goes by Jacob finds a way to get people to come to the Island he eventually brings the Blackrock and with it the Captain, Magnus Hanso, who just so happens to be the great grandfather of Alvar Hanso who helped create the DHARMA initiative ( I think with the Help of Jacob, and the journal of the first mate, that is now owned by Widmore). Meanwhile the people that land on the Island all go through what we have seen the Losties go through, and some end up siding with the Natives and live the rest of their lives on the Island, and some die.
But let's back up just a little bit and talk about MIB, he, I believe, is supernatural. He would be the physical embodiment of Course Correction it is his job to stop Jacob, not correct time itself, but because Jacob is human, MIB cannot kill him so he needs a loop-hole. Enter John Locke.
A side note about MIB, I haven't decided yet but either he is Smokey, or he controls Smokey, and uses him as a tool to sway people that Jacob brings to the Island, or to judge and kill them, Maybe I just answered my own question, maybe Smokey can kill humans but not MIB, and that is why Jacob stays in the Foot, to keep away from Smokey, because it seems to me that Smokey cannot come to the beach maybe the reason possibly has something to do with water, but that is theory for another day.
anyway to sum this theory up I believe that by Jacob creating all the Religions thinking he was bringing peace and enlightenment for a better future, he actually created division and strife which ultimately leads to the corruption and destruction that MIB spoke about on the beach that day.
This would in effect make neither of them evil, but It would put MIB against Jacob as he is trying to prevent the end of the world that is a result of Jacob's actions to prevent the end of the world.
To end this where I started; The time travel that I theorize Jacob and Richard, have done is the thing that makes them appear to be ageless, but if they ever get back to their correct time, they will age as the rest of us do. Meanwhile they can die which would explain the end of season 5, and the reason why Richard is so freaked out by guns, but if they did die, it would be a simple trip back to our time again to resurrect as it were. (Christ perhaps, I think Richard could have pulled that off)
comments would be appreciated!
