I think alot have already guessed that if Locke was not Jacobs piece if u can say so, he was fooled by Smokey/m2 all along. (Like Ben). There is actually a theory that says that Anthony Cooper was in fact smokey that "made" Locke in order to use him for his purposes.

I must begin with mentioning that there is a theory about this i havent read it but just so u know.
In the beginning of season 5, when they timetraveled, i am starting to think that the times they travelled to was not coincidences, think of it, they travelled into 1950...something so that they could take care of the bomb, and they travveled to a time were the well was the only thing leading to the wheel, so that Locke would use the rope, and then they travelled into a time were the well had not been built yet, so that smokey/Christian could be alone with Locke, Did u notice that there was no way to the hole where the wheel was but there were still a wheel, maybe smokey can appear anywhere and built it. So i would say that the Orchid is representing mib.
And also they travelled back so that because Sawyer held on the rope it got stuck in the groun and maybe thats how that place got found by the dharma in the first place.
Locke talking to Richard about seeing himself is among the reasons they had that conversation. Locke was brought to the island because og Matthew abbadon whom works for Widmore and if Widmore works for anyone its mib.
Maybe Jacob was forced to make sure Locke survived the fall because according to mib he had to have a player of his own, its more likely that mib has set the rules then Jacob since Jacob is not doing the best things to get what he seem to want.
