Jacob says that "it only ends once, everything else is just progress". What is progress exactly? Well if you remember Faraday talking about time, he describes it as a flow. The future and the past don't matter. What matters is right now. Our choices depict the future. Small changes won't necessarily affect anything, but one big event can change the future.
Now I don't buy into the whole time loops just happen. There has to be a starting point and if there is a starting point, there has to be a end point. The end that Jacob refers to is this end point. I believe that when time travel occurs, it begets more time travel. It's like a ball of snow going down a hill. The more it rolls down the hill, the more momentum it gathers. I think the little things that are affecting the characters in each loop causes something small to change in the next loop. I believe that this is the first loop that included the oceanic 6(or 4) to be in 1977 because Desmond comes to Faraday's Mom altering the events of that 2007. Before that loop, Daniel Faraday would go to the camp alone and get killed by his mother. This in turn would cause her to make him become a scientist to give him another chance at changing the past. He wasn't a variable, he was a constant. To ensure that there would be another chance for all of this to happen again. Jack, Sayid, K! ate, and Hurley are the variables. Because of them, the bomb went off, thus, causing the next iteration to occur leading to the end that Jacob is waiting for.
And the reason I think that we were shown the 2008 timeline with Flocke was to show us what the Adversary wanted to happen, as well as what happened to Ben, Sun, Frank, and Locke's body. Seeing as that timeline would now be over.
