Juliet was brought to the island to solve the problem with women giving birth on the island, but what if it was her fault to begin with? I think, when Juliet activated the Jughead bomb by smashing it in with the rock, it did indeed explode, but instead of creating a mushroom cloud and behaving the way a hydrogen bomb is supposed to, it reacted with the exotic matter that Radzinsky had been drilling into and negated it in some way. Much in the same way that Faraday was able to negate the poison gas in the Tempest station. But a hydrogen bomb still exploded and with that come the after effects of nuclear fall out. One of which is pregnant women dying during their third trimester. We already know that Amy successfully gave birth on the island just prior to the detonation of Jughead. The only other successful births that occurred after the detonation of Jughead were the birth of Aaron and the birth of Alex. Ju! liet has already said that she believes that the problem happens during conception and that if a woman got pregnant off the island (like Danielle or Claire) that she'd be okay. So what if the nuclear fallout from Jughead is actually mutating the sperm or egg or embryo itself during the act of conception? Does this mean that other mutations can occur as well? What about Aaron or Alex or Ji Yeon? They successfully survived their births, but did they suffer any mutations? Did it make them special? Miles was born on the island prior to the detonation of Jughead and he is special, so is it because Dr. Chang had been exposed to the electromagnetism and exotic matter? Is it the electromagnetism and not the nuclear fallout from Jughead? Or is it both? And what about Walt? We know that he is special. Was Walt conceived on the island? It could be very possible that Michael is not Walt's father at all, that Susan had lived on the island and conceived Walt with someone else! , but after the detonation of Jughead and then gave birth to W! alt off island, allowing for Walt to be born okay, but just special. I think that the mutations that allow for specialness or the killing of the pregnant women are either from severe exposure to radiation or electromagnetism. Much in the same way that Faraday explained to Desmond that time-shifting could occur from severe exposure to radiation or electromagnetism.
