In your physics or science classes, we all took basic chemical reactions and were able to predict their results. x-amount of iron creates reaction B when mixed with y-amount of zinc. It's completely predictable.
The only thing that prevents you from knowing exactly what will happen is certain variables you didn't account for. Even so the reaction happens just as it should have, because all things in this world are guided by the same laws of physics. When it rains, if something breaks, everything, is nothing more than a series of predictable chemical reactions.
Even your thoughts. You think that you are thinking, and you think that you are aware and in control of yourself, but your thoughts are also nothing more than chemical and electrical reactions. They're all predictable if you know what all the variables are.
Therefore, your life is already laid out before you. You think that you will make decisions, but those decisions are all influenced by the stimulus around you, whether the change makes you feel good, or if friends are family are encouraging you. So in the end, you can change anything, and that is in the real world. You're going to do whatever you are going to do, and just because you don't know what that is right now, doesn't mean all of the reactions and stimuli around you haven't already made the decision for you.
And that's where our losties find themselves.
The problem some people are finding, I believe (and I could be wrong) is that they're assuming that there had to be a version of the 70's without the losties, and then another once the losties decided to come back to the past.
But as I said, everything is just a series of reactions. It's all predictable, and therefore predetermined.
And if that's true, then it means that the losties, by the laws of science fictional physics, could appear in the past, well before anybody knew they even existed, and certainly before they decided to.
This could happen, because everything, even in our real reality, is already set in stone, and is going to happen. The future has already taken place. We just haven't gotten there yet, but molecule A is going to bounce off molecule B, and atom x is going to combine with atom y, and this is going to happen a zillion times, and each time is going to be precisely predictable and unavoidable.
There is no free will, and therefore no altering anything. What you perceive as free will, is simply a denial of the fact that your decisions are made for you by positive and negative reinforcing stimuli.
In fact if you don't believe me, try finding one decision you've made that wasn't selfish. One decision ever that didn't you make you feel good to help somebody, or excited that you skipped class. One decision that didn't sate your hunger, or make you feel relieved that you got that one out of the way. Everything you do, even if it's for others, always gives you a sense of satisfaction of some sort. It's all chemical reactions.
And because this is all predestined, the losties appeared in the past before they were even born in some cases, and so there was never once a version of the 70's that didn't include them.
