I want to challenge anybody who thinks Jacob is good, simply because he believes humanity is good. I've read several comments stating that he even believes that humanity can exist peacefully together without resorting to violence to settle difference.
If you believe that makes him good, you are falling into the misconception trap that led to men like Hitler. Yes, people just kept letting him take and take, because we didn't want to be violent, and we were so sure he would stop if we just gave in once more, until we realized, "Oh Crap, We have to kill this guy."
Having faith in humanity is great. But there will never, ever, ever be a time, in no place, in no culture, ever, where evil will cease to exist and violent or lethal action will simply go away. It won't happen, and trying to make it happen is a catastrophic mistake.
The Point?
If this is Jacob's take on life, then perhaps he is the bad one, despite his seemingly good intentions. Have you not considered that FLOCKE may be right in that he realizes that people will always have conflicts with one another, and recognizes that action must be taken when they arise. And that doesn't make Flocke evil. He may not even like the conflict, but he recognizes when it's time to take care of business and protect his interests.
I once heard a thoughtful line that said, "Naive wishing for peace is the surest way to encourage an aggressor."
That's why some people are upset with the current take of some national policy. Making friends with everybody, just as Jacob is doing, may seem great. It may seem very nice and friendly, and it is. Except when you do that, you drop your guard and leave open the opportunity for that one inevitable evil person to take advantage of you. You may not be a big fan of fighting, but to deny that there are times when it becomes necessary is dangerously incorrect.
It's just a fact of life. Some people will seek to dominate and harm others, and for that reason a completely peaceful society cannot exist, because you must always be prepared for war, sometimes proactively (see North Korea). It won't ever change. It's impossible.
So if Jacob is that guy, who just blindly has faith in humanity, that someday he will create a society that has absolutely zero violence, then he's wrong. And in his pacifism, he'll lead himself and whatever society he's trying to create into destruction.
