Take a look at the frame of the recent episode: begins and ends (for the most part) with Desmond.
I am one of those who thinks something is going to change. I don't get why people are so closed off to the possibility that the past can change. Yes, whatever happened, happened, but only so far. Something or someone has been manipulating events to ensure this, but I think it goes further than that. Look at what we've seen so far. We have Faraday bringing up the concept of variables and the possibility of changing things (granted, he got shot by his mother anyways, which led some to believe that nothing can be changed, ever, which is something I would find to be extremely dull for such a wonderful show).
We also have Faraday saying the "rules" don't apply to Desmond; he is unique. Now, look at the recent episode title, "The Variable," not, "The Variables." Faraday said variables are people, them, yet the title is singular and, again, the episode starts, and at least nears the end, with Desmond.
If things are indeed going to change, Desmond (and maybe others) will be the unique variable that makes this possible. I know they keep sticking by WHH, but come on, why else would TPTB throw in all this research that Faraday has done on it? Why else would they say such things of Desmond? I have been thinking for a while that what we have been seeing is not only an attempt at securing WHH, but is an attempt at securing WHH so that a certain event presents itself that provides an opportunity for this maddening "loop" to be broken without pardoxical danger; one big act of course correction (or an opportunity for someone's personal gain; look at Widmore, of all people, coming to check on Desmond). And don't forget about Faraday's journal. That's still around, bound to be picked up and followed.
And we all remember them saying there is no time travel right? I just think it would be a great, logical twist for the writers to go with. Keep people thinking whatever happened, happened, and then blow them away with a huge alteration.
As I've also stated in another post, I think the split in time with the losties is also significant in making changes possible (variables at opposite ends = change of equation). The island/universe would have course corrected before anyone had a chance to time travel again UNLESS it needed something to happen differently. OR, maybe they needed to go around again with part of the group in present time to therefore sort of merge times into one new loopless current. That's where my mind's goin...
Or WHH, and the purpose of season 5 was just to fill in holes... I for one would be extremely disappointed
