We have all seen through the history of this show, that the dead body is needed by the island to revive that individual into a breathing, interacting person again. (Example, Christian Shepard and John Locke). The other dead individuals that the island has presented to our losties have been in dreams and/or in one on one conversations almost always in dire circumstances or immediately before their deaths. What lies in the metal box brought by Ilana and Bram is not some kind of weapon or future technology, but surely the body of Jacob.
I would guess that Jacob was an important part of the Black Rock crew(maybe even the captain), and was killed on the island due to circumstances we don't know yet. For some unknown reason, he has always been able to influence activities on the island, but only through a small select group of individuals that have had the ability to communicate with him. My guess is that up to the point before the Oceanic 815 flight, only Richard Alpert, (and post temple healed Ben), have had this gift.
The Others have been a very influential, but at the same time, quite an insignificant player in the whole grand scheme of things. They live in huts and eat fish and squid, live off the land, and live what seems to be a fairly nomadic lifestyle. Only with the addition of Ben Linus and his knowledge of the Dharma Initiative and their technology have the others taken on the roll we have become accustomed to. A role of deception, living in houses, trying to fix pregnancy issues and so on. The Others, like so many of our Losties, have lost their way and need to get their lives back in order. The difference between the Losties and the Others, is that the Others serve the Island, and our Losties are pawns in the Islands grand scheme.
This brings me back to my original theme. Elloise Hawking and Whidmore are responsible for getting Ilana and Bram and the (What Lies in the Shadow of the Statue) crew to the island. The reason Whidmore invested so heavily in the Black Rock Journal and the Hanso's was because they knew where his body was. As well as making sure all the Losties get where they are supposed to, to keep the time line the same, their ultimate end goal was to get Jacob's body back to the island so the Others can reestablish themselves as the rightful protectors of the island, be justly lead by their true leader, and avert what the true disaster that Valenzetti was trying to avoid with his equation and its constant numbers, 4,8,15,16, 23, 42. The Others realized that the Valenzetti equation was accurate, which is why they let the Dharma Initiative come to the island and set up shop in the first place.
Elloise and Whidmore have finally found Jacob's body, and they know that the ramifications of this will lead to Jacob returning to the form he needs to be in to lead everyone to avert the coming disaster we don't know about yet. Locke thinks he is going to kill Jacob, but he will quickly realize once Jacob's body is released back to the Island by Ilana and Brom, that he is in conflict over what Jacob thinks is right. Brom and Ilana know that Jacob's body needs to be let out of the metal box in the Shadow of the Statue to resurrect him. By what is left of the 4 toed statue is where the metal box will be opened and Jacob will be revealed. The final war everyone has been talking about will be between Locke and Jacob. Locke as the current leader, and Jacob trying to get his people back. I would guess that all of our Losties will end up on the side of Jacob, and Locke will ultimately fail. This is what Season Six will be all about.
This is my first theory post, so rip it apart losties. What a pleasure this has been.
