...Smokey has been looking for someone to do his bidding for a while now, hence the ability to “scan” people. He’s been looking through all the variables in this loop for a hole. Can you be subservient? Will you bow to me? Do you have what it takes to kill a dude? If you answered “No” to any of these questions, I’ll pick you up and bang you against some trees until I kill you (R.I.P. Mr. Eko).
Smokey finally found his men with John and Ben. John, looking for any reason to exist, merely needs to be told he has to die in order to have meaning in his life, is up for the challenge. Ben, sick of serving a leader who seems to care nothing for him, coupled with being scared into submission by his dead daughter, is ready to get bloody.
Why were we shown both John’s and Ben’s births? Why are both their mom’s named Emily? Both responsible for the death of their dads? The list goes on, but I believe this was all groundwork being laid to lead us to this point in the story – where we’d totally buy these two inadvertently working together, manipulated by a force stronger than they are, to kill Jacob....
