The True Identity of Jacob:
I'd like to start off this theory by simply stating that Jacob exists. There have been many people theorizing that he doesn't exist, but I believe this can be out ruled since we have already met Jacob in a physical form. He was shown sitting in a chair, and even spoke a line of dialogue to John Locke during his visit ('Help Me').
So - Jacob exists.
I think it's also safe to assume that the level of secrecy over Jacob's true identity is a bit intriguing. This heavily pushes me to believe that it must be someone we already know on the show. I mean, could you imagine after all this build up, if Jacob was just a new character? It would be the ultimate let down.
So - Jacob has to be someone we already know.
But who?
Being my favorite mystery on Lost, I have often pondered on who Jacob could possibly be. At first I assumed it was Locke, the obvious answer. Then I even began to think it might be Sawyer. Recently, I was almost positive it would be Aaron, Claire's baby. But I've landed on my final prediction of who he could be: Jack Shephard.
I'll start with the most obvious reason and then follow with some small/scattered reasons.
- From the opening scene of Jack waking up in Episode 1, Season 1, the show has always seemed to focus on him the most, as he's become somewhat of a main character and definitely a leader of the survivors.
He has always been the non-believer, the character who relates most to the viewer watching the show. He almost always says what the viewer is thinking, and he is the first one to criticize any mythological explanations within the show. It would be the ultimate twist to have Jack end up being the 'leader' of the island: Jacob.
-Another powerful point is the people we've seen relaxing in Jacob's cabin throughout the episodes. Christian Shephard (Jack's Dad) and Claire Littleton (Jack's Sister). Both sitting in there calm as can be like they're hanging out at a family barbeque. This is the most obvious and revealing point I have to offer. Why would Christian and Claire be with anyone else? Why did Claire abandon her baby?
(SIDE NOTE): There has been an intriguing lack of Jack in Season 5. This is the first season where Jack's character has been placed on the back burner of the story, and is totally clueless as to what his purpose is. His purpose is not to blow up that bomb, it's to realize that he is Jacob. The recent absence of Jack has been setting us up big time for quite a twist. The writers have set it up for the viewers to believe Locke is Jacob, as Jacob is a leader of the island, and Locke is so in tune with the island. But we forget that our main character all along has been Jack. Our main leader has always been Jack. Can you recall a scene where Jacob has been mentioned in the presence of Jack? Jack has never discussed or even heard of Jacob. I feel like this is a red flag.
-One of the first mythological looks into the life of Jack Shephard was the episode that explained his tattoos. It reads: "He walks among us, but is not one of us." The woman who gave him the tattoo told him she could 'see' his true character: a leader, who is lonely and angry. This could be directly related to Jack walking among the other survivors, but not being one of them.
-The scene that reveals the eye of Jacob when Hurley approaches the Cabin shows that Jacob has brown eyes. Jack has brown eyes. Locke does not.
- Time Travel has been a big piece of the show lately, and I believe that through some form of Time Travel, the writers could explain that Jacob is simply an older Jack from the future, stuck in the past. This is Jack's destiny.
- How does Horace Godspeed end up with a map to Jacob's Cabin? It sure is puzzling when you think of Jacob being someone like John Locke, who has had absolutely no interaction with the Dharma people before the Purge. But who has? Jack. He has lived with Dharma, and it's possible he sketches out a map for Horace before he leaves. A possible time travel theory is what if Jack gets all of the other Dharma people back to present time, but he has to stay back in the 1970's, and in the 30 years, he grows into an old man: Jacob. He uses his power in the 1970's to control everyone by having information about the future. He makes himself the leader by having unique information of what's going to happen.
Anyways. that's what I have. Whether Jacob is Jack or Jack's grandfather, I'm heavily convinced it's someone within the Shepherd family. And to have it be Jack would be an amazing twist for the show.
