Ask yourself this: Why does Christian appear to Locke instead of Jacob? I think that Jacob doesn't appear to Locke because he does not want Locke to recognise him. Jacob is Jack. Likewise when Locke falls down the well it is Christian who visits him and tells him what to do.
Christian: "Say hello to my Son."
Locke: "Who's your son?"
Jack triggers the incident in 1977 creating an alternate timeline which he is stuck in. He adopts the name Jacob and cannot let himself be seen by either Ben or Richard because they will come to know him in 2004 when the plane crashes on the island. However, someone has to be communicating with Jacob/Jack even if just orally and Jacob/Jack is carefully instructing the others on what to do to ensure the events follow the right order. For example, when the plane crashes perhaps it is Jacob who tells Ben or Richard to capture Jack, Kate and Sawyer, because it is imperative that Jack operates on older Ben, remove the tumour and saving his life becuase Ben CANNOT die yet. Ben is instrumental in the key moments in as much as that Ben must kill John Locke. Locke has to die so that he can be resurrected by the island placing him on the same kind of other/spiritual? plane (one that Jacob is on) that will enable him to see and communicate with Jacob. Locke has to kill Jacob in o! rder to break the time loop and alternate time line so that time can follow a linear path again.
Once Locke kills Jacob/Jack the time loop ends and Sawyer and Co. return to present day.
That is why it was Christian and not Jacob that spoke to Locke in the cabin and at the bottom of the well because at that stage it was critical that Locke not know who is Jacob is.
Both Ben and Eloise Hawking are correct in saying that the 06' must return to the island. Hawking is trying to end the time loop (which is also why she sends Daniel to the island)and that is why she says to Penny, "I don't know what happen's next."
The 06' have to return to ensure the events happen as they happened. For example:
Sayid was meant to shoot Ben
Kate was meant to take Ben to the others.
Juliet is the one who puts the idea in Kate's head.
Sawyer & Juliet were meant to arrive 3 years prior to Jack and Co. so that Sawyer cements his place as head of security thus enabling Jack, Hurley and Kate to become part of Dharma.
Hurley totally giving away to Chang that they are from the future causing Chang to evacuate the island with Sawyer & Juliet being saved by Chang's intervention.
Jack will ultimately sacrifice his life (by getting Locke to kill him in 2007) and thus saving everyone; breaking the time loop and allowing Sawyer & Co. to return to present time.
What happens to Jack? Quite possible even though Locke kills him, he still might not die because he is/was alive in 1977???
Daniel Faraday was right in saying that they are all variables because they exist in more than one time (or two of them exist at the same time).
Richard tells Sun 'That he saw them all die'?? is probably telling the truth from his perspective but i think he sees them get caught up in some kind of explosion or swirling smoke (or however it happens)believing them to be dead but they are actually caught in the alternate time line.
Okay there are some hazy patches but this idea makes sense and it will be interesting see how accurate it will be.
